I did my masters (and some post-grad work, before finding that software would pay the bills a lot more readily...) on induction and PM machines for small hydro, and this is broadly a fair summary.
In a modern EV, total system efficiency from battery to driveshaft is likely:
Induction: ~85ā90%...
I donāt fully agree with all your points (but do agree with most of them), but I am fully aligned with your sentiment - ultimately people need to decide if this is important to them or not.
I put myself in the camp of I donāt like it, and I donāt like how Rivian are spinning it - but at the end...
Have you tried to induce this? Ie place your R1 next to a sprinkler or similar (try the front wheel wells based off your warning lights) - Iāve never heard of this but being able to repro would probably go a long way toward getting Rivian to be able to help get you fixed up.
Iām less convinced: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/r2-emergency-door-opening-sanity-check.55862/post-948768
I hope they do however resolve this issue but right now feel they are in iPhone 4 āyouāre holding it wrongā mode - and are trying to reframe choices made for packaging...
Media training - they are using consistent and rehearsed lines.
See my post a bit ago; wassym is only telling part of the story and omitting that other mfrs are able to implement the same functionality whist retaining fully mechanical release handles both the interior and exterior of the door...
BrayBay, thanks for the timestamp. That clip plus Wassymās Reddit post are the two best Rivian statements I have seen, but they still do not address the core failure mode.
My concern is less interior egress: it is exterior access when power is compromised.
Jeff says the exterior handles can...
With Johnny Ive/LoveFrom doing the interior Iād have been shocked not too see it.
My personal wishlist for gen3 (not in any particular order):
* Acend interior āmetalā trim that doesnāt chip when you look at it.
* Gen1 door handles
* Less wind noise
* An interior you can hose out the floor on...
Of all the days to announce 𤣠Toyota seems really set on failing at EVs - that said I feel thereās a certain gravity to the exterior though that may just be an overly lucid train of thought?
Iād not conflate exterior handles that are flush with the body with primarily electrically operated latches. Gen1 R1 is a great example of a veichle that does both exterior handles (will even work when not āpresentedā and provides a mechanical link to the latch), interior handles and latches well.
Almost all, if not all, modern cars do this afiak - which is why they are not hyping it. Theres nothing to hype - itās parity not an advantage.
BMW, Honda, Acura, Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover at least (but to be fair not all) let you control this. Eg...
Most of the discussion is focused on internal electronic latches. Personally, Iām less worried about those, as long as thereās a true mechanical override (and thank god it looks like it can at least be used in the R2's back doors - I don't think its possible to use the mechanical override in the...
Where it makes me worry is that this almost certainly means they have taken the gen2 approach to the exterior door handles. Now of course if the door is locked you are SOl anyway, but i really miss the (potential placebo) reassurance of having a mechanical unlatch mechanic from the outside...
It's my pet peeve here (though time will see if it's justified) - as it's a new and unique location for debris collection. Combined with the slit that the arm moves though - I suspect this will be largely non functional in winter (filled with snow/ice), and worry it will be a cause of warranty...
I only managed to watch 50% of Dougs video so far, but I thought they were going back to gen1 style mechanical door releases? Looks to still be electronic in the R2 he's reviewing?
Also -that rear wiper recess is gonna fill up with pine needles so fast come fall.
They share the same SoC - but itās mounted on a different board. From the softwares perspective they are identical - so perf etc is the same across generations; other than the higher load in gen2 when displaying camera feeds.
Yeah, Rivian is probably hanging this on the Portable Charger Guide, not the warranty doc. The guide explicitly says not to use an extension cord (or power strip, converter, etc), so once you say āyesā they treat it as misuse and deny.
If you want to push back, keep it simple:
āWhat failure...
