Designing large batteries is very hard. It isnāt just a matter of stuffing cells into a package with a BMS. That companies like GM are outsourcing this critical component is pretty sad.
Yep, I was on the Tesla forums from the beginning of the Model S ramp in 2013, and now I get to do it all...
Both Tesla and Rivian opted to use small cylindrical cells partly because cell short circuits could be safely contained in the pack. GM failed to design their pack to be able to contain cell short circuits.
Right. Battery/pack design also had a huge effect on the Bolts completely self combusting. Tesla also has had battery cell issues here and there, but you never hear about them since the worst that happens is that the cell fire is contained completely within the pack and the customer gets a...
What the heck are you talking about? Havenāt you noticed that all GM Bolt batteries have been recalled for destructive fires? Ford and Chevy will have as steep a learning curve in EVs as everyone else.
While I would like to see an R1S before plunking down $$ to buy it, I console myself that if I don't like it, I'll be able to turn around and sell it for at least the price I paid for it since I'm an early reservation holder.
Right. I actually cannot recall ever seeing an early employee delivery Tesla get this kind of treatment and I've been a TMC forum member for the Model X, 3, and Y rollouts. Almost by definition, employee early delivery vehicles are going to have problems. So writing a "review" based on such a...
Itās just the Long Range version, not Plaid, just dual motor. I hear waits on new X are now about 1 year. Long waiting times for the top EVs are going to be a reality for the next several years I suspect.
At the risk of getting pointy things thrown at me, I am surviving my now 3+ year wait for my April-May delivery timeline for my wife's R1S by driving my just delivered (ordered January 2021) refreshed Tesla Model X with yoke steering wheel.
As other have pointed out, 50K or so pre-orders is quite robust. That backlog will grow, not shrink, as vehicles get into customer hands and they become company evangelists selling the brand (as happened with both Apple and Tesla).
If you want to compare with Tesla, the correct comparison is...
So, anyone care about lack of some sort of advanced autopilot? It has lane keeping, but only in certain areas. That part was kinda vague in the manual, but it implies geolocking to known freeways.
Also the portable charger instructions doesn't have a way to set the amperage draw, so you can't...
Did you get to see the body welding area where they would have robots? Or the general assembly area where they put everything into the chassis? Or are they still working on getting those areas up to speed?
In today's Tesla quarterly conference call, Elon Musk laid out how Tesla will allow non Tesla EV owners to charge at their Superchargers. In a nutshell, there will be an app for that.
Using (presumably) the standard Tesla app, you'd create an account with your credit card. Once you arrive at a...
Well, the "110V outlets" (which are obviously 120V, grrr) are described as "15 amp" plugs. So maybe they have an 1,800 watt inverter? If so, great. but I suspect this is another marketing flub and they just mean the plugs are the type of plugs that you use at home which at home can supply 15A...
Based on the replies, looks like
The latest Teslaās make that sound. You canāt hear it with the windows up. Outside, it isnāt all that loud, sounds like a UFO spaceship.
