I use Weavegrid with my Tesla.
If Rivian's implementation is similar, it will require active participation from your utility as well. Or Rivian might be doing something different.
A rule of thumb I've heard is that the emissions overhead from combustion should be increased by about 10% for upstream operations to factor that in. I don't have a great source to validate that, largely because the oil & gas industry has successfully fought off most attempts to measure...
I've heard someone claim Tesla uses them because they're cheaper. I have trouble believing they're significantly cheaper since the backup mechanism is more complex than just a manual door latch.
I sort of see the rationale for Tesla because they use the frameless windows, and the windows move...
While these suggestions of carrying hammers and tools to break glass are all well and good, we can probably expect ~1% of drivers to take these precautions.
While the best alternative is a simple door handle that you pull once or (maybe) twice.
Tesla's is similar. Although I still can't figure out the back seat emergency override, and I sure as hell know my kids can't manage it. I haven't seen the Rivian Gen 2 implementation yet, but please share if it isn't.
It still fails on two fronts:
1. The ability to lock/unlock so the...

EDIT: Non-paywalled link: https://archive.ph/lccr7
The article is paywalled, but somehow I got through the first time. I really don't want this to be anti-Tesla (or even anti-Rivian) rage-bait. I'm hoping...
That’s about 1% of this years sales target. Should help with numbers. Particularly if they can deliver most in Q4, which we know will be a tough quarter.
A lifecycle analysis relies on average lifespan, not anecdotal lifespan. The current average lifespan of a car is something like 15 years IIRC, and includes ~4 owners.
That 15 year number is an average that includes cars that are wrecked 5 minutes after they drive off the lot to the 1950’s cars...
There have actually been numerous studies that come to similar conclusions. The IEA even has an interactive calculator where you can put in your own assumptions. My only complaint is that it requires conversion from freedom units.
I've taken a shot at doing some climate math myself. The...
A big reason some CA fire departments went with Rivian was fire risk. Not having a hot exhaust system and catalytic converter under the car makes a huge difference to fire risk for vehicles that have to drive over those dry grasses.
I volunteer to judge business plans for a nearby university's entrepreneurship program. I love the enthusiasm, but I'm not sure how realistic it is. Let's start with what you can execute on. A few I know you can't right off the bat:
1. Discounts to national parks: entrance fees to national...
They've said 1st half, and don't be much more optimistic than that. 1st half may mean June 73rd for non-employees as well.
They probably baked a little time into their schedule for mishaps and delays, but not a lot.
These production dates are nearly impossible to move up once set. Rivian is...
I did a Safelite replacement about a year ago. At the time, Safelite was not certified to recalibrate the cameras, and I had to go in to a separate Rivian service appointment for the calibration.
It sounded like Safelite was in the process of getting certified for this, so maybe it's possible...
The entirety of US policy operates on about a 10-14 day cycle. That's roughly the amount of time for a story to hit the new and for everyone to get bored clicking on the links.
Hyandai will be fully back to work and the entire episode forgotten in about two weeks.
Gear tunnel is #1.
Always available electricity is a close second. I never contemplated having a vehicle that would have a dedicated stove and coffee maker before.
There certainly will be more than zero overlap in potential customers. Someone looking at the higher-trim R2 might compare it with the lower-trim BMW. That works both ways though. Someone who's driven BMW's forever may be willing to check out this new EV upstart.
I try to focus on the ~80%...
Specs look good. I've never cared for BMW's, but it sounds like their EV's are doing well.
I think it's past time we stop considering any EV with comparable(ish) tech specs as direct competitors.
The target market for a Jeep Cherokee and BMW X3 is dramatically different even though they are...
My time in the southern swamps in the Army gave me the opposite feeling towards the outdoors there.
Maybe that's why I migrated to the mountains of Colorado.
I don't have pictures, but I visited GFC, Dirtbox, and SuperPacific at the Colorado Overland Expo a few weeks back.
My impressions changed after seeing them in person. Part of this is admittedly driven by some super-engaged and knowledgeable employees at GFC and some less-knowledgeable sales...
