It really depends on how the market evolves. I normally like to keep vehicles for a decade, but I do worry about the longevity of the suspension.
I'd probably upgrade earlier if the market delivers one of the two options:
1. An updated R1T that delivers on the three updates I've come down as...
Make sure you have an extension cord that is long enough for what you need to power, and also is rated for what you want to power. Many cheaper extension cords are not rated for a 1,500W constant load. Get a properly rated one if in doubt.
Looks like a great trip!
It's making me excited for an upcoming trip to Moab.
I hope we can get some DCFC in the Hanksville and/or Torrey areas in the near future. That would open the whole area a lot more.
For a sense of scale, Tesla sold about 50k cars per year in Canada before the whole "heil Hitler" thing.
US based automakers are going to increasingly screwed over the next few decades. Successful car makers are global entities, not national ones. GM, Ford and Stellantis do business in many...
What makes the Rivian unique (and expensive) in your case is that it's a 7-seat SUV.
You're looking at a 5-seat CUV if you're looking for something significantly cheaper. This means the R2 is for you. Or an Ioniq 5 or EV6.
If you truly don't care about the tech, gizmos, and wow factor, than...
Rivian has been working hard to be mini-Tesla for a while. Many of their key employees are former Tesla employees. The R2 was announced with a similar price and similar dimensions to the Model Y.
I'm willing to bet that Rivian's pricing looks very similar to the table below, just excluding...
With three brands of chargers in the same parking lot, it looks like they're actually competing on price.
This charger has prices ranging from $0.3/kWh to $0.46/kWh, with lower pricing for Rivian drivers.
EA is listed at $0.64/kWh in Plugshare.
Tesla is listed at $0.34/kWh to $0.5/kWh.
The...
3d printing has come a long way in the last few years. I had looked at a consumer one a few years back and came to the conclusion my technical skills weren't up to it. It would have been beyond me to get it running.
I finally bought one for myself the kids for Christmas. It's amazing and...
I'm not arguing your point, because it is valid. But all of the factors matter too.
User experience in an EV is the combination of range, charging speed, and efficiency.
A Silverado EV pulling up to a 6kW L2 charger at a hotel is only going to fill ~25% of the battery overnight. A midsize...
The more I think about it, the more I know that the ski crowd is the exact demographic where most Rivian buyers fall.
Most Rivian buyers are those who love the idea of outdoor adventures, and they aspire to do more outdoor adventures. But in reality they're overworked upper-middle class types...
Ski resorts are such obvious places to install big banks of L2 chargers. I don't know why more don't do it.
The resorts have the electrical capacity, lots of EV's end up there, and a good number of the resorts are just far enough away from major metro areas to require some type of charge to...
I think it's a great place.
Most people's fear of EV's in the cold is greater than the limitations of EV's in the cold. What better place to demonstrate that than Montana?
Ski resorts are also places that get lots of traffic from the same demographics that buy Rivians. Both locals and tourists.
I read this and I get it. These things are big and expensive and complicated. A DCFC deployment has more in common with industrial electrical than small commercial applications.
Then I also read things like this. Tesla just installed a site with 164 stalls.
Of course you can read about the...
I'm onboard with the opinion that higher voltages (800V or a different number) are what it would take for me to consider upgrading.
It's not a big enough deal that I'd ditch the vehicle without it. It would just take something of that magnitude to get me to switch.
Do I recall correctly that...
I see the benefits of portable power on one hand.
On the other hand, the sound of RV generators is rage inducing. I go far out of my way to avoid that noise.
The climate will be unsuitable for mass human habitation long before the last drop is extracted. The upper limit on the climate's warming is greater than the upper limit of the planet's ability to support 8 billion people.
There are forcing functions that will reduce our usage of...
I doubt it. The supply of used EV's as a percent of of the total fleet is still insignificant. The total US vehicle fleet was still less than 2% EV last time I checked.
It might become a factor when EV's are maybe a third of used vehicles, but that's a long ways away.
Multi-family...
My experiences have mostly been good, with a few exceptions. I consider a couple former bosses life long friends.
I had two really bad bosses in the Army which is probably why I prioritize freedom now.
I worked at one startup where the freedom to quit was necessary. After 4 months in a toxic...
I think home charging is made out to be more of a barrier than it is. If 35% of households rent (I'll assume that number is correct out of laziness), then a significant fraction are renting single family homes, duplex's, etc that are easy to add L2 chargers to. There's usually a way to work...
