Understand - and never said it's one person. Social media and forums represent a tiny fraction of the buyer base. Yup- paint is expensive on the Rivian - Yup- it's raised some eyebrows. But I surmise, just my opinion, it will barely dampen enthusiasm for R2.
You can have a totally reasonable opinion that Rivian's paint upcharges feel steep, that's fair.
However, comparing Rivian's paint pricing to a BMW iX3 or Porsche Taycan is making a false equivalence: it assumes that option pricing scales linearly with vehicle MSRP, but that's not how...
Again- just an assumption based on current R1 rates. I was thinking about $15,000k down - drops payment to about $890 - but I want to see what lease options look like.
They've built-in so many other options, like heated/ventilated seats and steering wheel, that others upcharge for (like the ix3 if you want a heated steering wheel) - guess their analytics think that grabbing margin in paint works best for them.
But we don't know that to be true, do we? Who's to say that the assistant isn't running in a different part of the wiring harness? Sending comm's sure, but not necessarily wired to triggering, say, a motor.
I'm always amazed at how, two years later, they can send a software update that improves...
I've worked in product dev. I get it. Of course it's by design and since it's part of the revenue plan, it's a necessity. It's THEIR investment THEIR tech... buy it, or don't. Read the fine print, if you don't like something in the contract, don't buy it. Or go lobby the government to put the...
Another fallacy that service fees and subscriptions are 100% independent of hardware - all expenses and revenues are fungible - R&D costs come from the sale of hardware and, now subscriptions. Neither are in a vacuum from each other.
Aside from those things restricted by safety, what makes you think that every possible electro-mechanical function is hardwired to voice controls that didn't exist when the car was built?
Nothing? That hardware has costs. This is exactly the internet mentality the techbros use to disrupt ad wipe out traditional business models and income streams because they can write a code for that, and make a billion.
maybe try putting a tinfoil hat over the cell antenna and see what you get.
I took an R1 out for an hour today the sat in another for about 30 minutes to play with Rivian Assistant. Color me impressed, within its limitations anyway. The natural language ability is very good. I tried saying the same commands and queries in several different ways from clear and formal to...
No personal experience other than a friend who had a Polestar 2 and almost from the get-go had problems. She traded her Tesla S in for it and it spent more time in the shop than in her hands. She got pretty cranky with the dealer. Just one data point FWIW.
