Wait.
Max wait could be up to 6 weeks, but you may asked to pick up in just 1 week.

It all depends on where it is and where it needs to go. If you can wait, just wait. I was really eager to get mine so I jumped on a close match with a few upgrades. I was told 6 weeks, but it arrived and delivered within 4 weeks. I didn’t get any indication on where the shipping originated, but guessing Normal, since it took 4 weeks to SoCal. Best of luck and enjoy!!
Thanks. I’m going to wait. No problem.

Did you sign a "binding sales agreement" with Rivian August 2022? If yes, that's your delivery date, for tax purposes. If no, your actual delivery date is relevant for tax purposes.
Don't think you're correct on that. Colorado Department of Revenue says: "For the purpose of determining the allowable credit amount, the purchase or lease generally is not considered complete until the purchaser or lessee takes possession of the truck." https://tax.colorado.gov/sites/tax/files/documents/ITT_Innovative_Motor_Vehicle_Credit_Jun_2023.pdf

I mean, waiting isn't going to get it to you any earlier, right?

Tough call. You have 6 weeks till end of the year. I just bought an R1T out of the shop, and it took 10 days from order to driving it off the lot. I live 30 minutes from a service center. Rivian usually hustles to get trucks out the door close to the end of the year. Have your financing and insurance straight up front, that is what took an extra day for me. I think you would be okay.

From what I understand, model years for Rivian are based on year of manufacture, not year of shipment.
Correct...

My R1T was manufactured in 12/2022 but the Title and window sticker both say "2023 Rivian R1T" so there is about one month before the end of the year when the new "model year" starts.

Colorado Innovative Truck credits do not apply to vehicles with MSRP greater than $80k if purchased after June 30, 2023. The $5k credit applies to trucks under 8500lbs GVWR.
Electric trucks over 8500lbs but under 10k lbs GVWR are generally classified as a light duty passenger motor vehicle for purposes of the credit. The binding contract only applies to the Federal tax credit, or if your state applies the same rules, but Colorado applies the credit in the tax year you took delivery.
So as long as your MSRP is below $80k and taken after June 30, 2023 and before Jan 1, 2025, your are eligible for the full $5k tax credit for EV.

@Bristlecone, I've been in the same boat as you. I agree with your interpretation of the CO tax credit information, i.e., the credit increases from $2800 to $5000 in 2024, and that it's the possession date, not the binding contract date, that's used to determine the amount you get. There are R1S's in the shop with my exact configuration, and last week I asked my guide how early I could safely order one with the goal of not taking possession until Jan 1 or later. Her response was to wait until Jan 1 to start the process to guarantee that I'm not pushed to take possession until Jan 1 or later. (That wasn't the answer I was looking for!)

One related concern that I have is whether waiting until early 2024 to select a Shop vehicle would result in getting a MY 2024 vehicle. As of right now, the IRS list of vehicles that qualify for the $7,500 tax credit for pre-Aug 2022 purchase agreements includes only 2022 and 2023 MY Rivians. I think the optimistic view is that the IRS will add MY 2024 vehicles to that list of qualifying vehicles at some point.

With all of that said, my situation just changed this morning because I just received the email from Rivian saying that it's time to start the purchase process on my reserved R1S. Needless to say, I'm excited, but now I need to try to delay taking delivery until 2024 if I want to get the additional $2200 in CO Tax Credit. (First world problems!)

I read the CO EV tax credit the same - that this 6 month window only gets you $2800 this year. Though, I thought there was an actual difference for the R1T and the R1S where the S got less? I got a T, so didn't dive in too much.
Unfortunately for me (tongue in cheek) I need a tax write off for my business THIS year, so that $2,200 was overweighted on the other end. I bought mine through my business, so the $80k rule also does not apply. That allowed me to pop for the A/T wheels/ package.

Based on the 2022 model year deliveries there will be plenty of 2023 model year vehicles still being delivered in 2024. I picked up my 2022 end of January 2023.
