#1 - Please, please, please let the truck be drivable with the driver's door open. It drives me crazy when I go to do it and it goes into park. I'm used to doing it a lot when positioning vehicles, backing up to trailers, etc. Cameras are nice, but after 30+ years of driving, it is just wnd nature to me. Please make it happen.

#2 - More for my wife, but please don't have the truck go into park when your butt comes off the seat. I didn't even know it happened until she told me. She doesn't like cameras, and prefers the old school of right hand on top of passenger seat and physically turning around to look while backing up. She's 5' 7", but she lifts her butt up in the process. I did it the other day with a super tricky backup with a trailer where the camera wasn't cutting it, and it happened to me. It is very annoying and now I understand her frustration.

You can drive with the driver's door open if your seatbelt is on and you're sitting in your seat. Same goes for the second item you mentioned. If your seatbelt is on and your door is closed, the vehicle wont go into park if you lift off the seat. Basically, as long as you have your seatbelt on, you need to either have your butt in the seat or your door closed and the truck wont go into park. This is a safety measure that keeps your truck from driving away without you in it ;)

If I understand correctly, you want the car to keep driving if you are not in the seat, seat belt is off and the door is open. Nothing could go wrong there.

Yeah the whole door open, no butt on seat thing seems like a terrible idea. There has been more than once that I have forgotten to put the vehicle in park before getting out with the silent running and the hold feature. Having it not park itself in that situation seems like a recipe for disaster.

^^^You guys obviously haven't been in trucks much or towed a lot. For those who have, you know what I mean. Being able to back up with the door open allows you to see everything on drivers side, be it a rock, a dog, a post, or a small child (which the cameras and radars might not catch).

Also, ITEMS #1 & #2 ARE COMPLETELY UNRELATED, SEPARATE REQUESTS. Every car and truck I've owned over 30 years allows me to go forward and back with door open. Never had an incident. If you're going to get out of the truck, put in park - duh. The butt off seat is for old school, traditional, look over shoulder back ups - and sometimes it's nice to get yourself higher to have a wider angle of viewing (having tailgate down can be a lifesaver with a low trailer).

By no means do I want the car to keep driving with door open, butt off seat. The Rivian is actually better tuned for what I'm asking than any ICE car or truck because those actually do continue to drive, forward or reverse, with foot off brake. Rivian, if anything, would barely creep if you forget to put into park - more than likely, it would stay stationary.

For those of you Ben Affleck / J-Lo mall crawlers, this post will be irrelevant.

Nope, not at all what I meant. Read post above.

been driving trucks for 20 years. I haven’t needed to have the door open since they started including cameras. Try it,

Backing up to a trailer in this Rivian with its terrible camera position I would like to have the door open and drive capability. It’s not as bad as no camera but I still have to get out and check alignment 2-3 times to get it right. The designers had obviously never driven a truckwith a trailer when deciding on this camera.

I just did a quick test in my R1S. You need 2 of the 3 conditions and the car will move.

The 3 conditions are Door closed, Butt in Seat and Seat Belt On.

Door open, seat belt on, butt in seat = Truck moves
Door closed, seat belt on, Butt in the Air = Truck moves
Door closed, seat belt off, Butt in the seat = Truck moves

It is when you try to break more than 2 of the conditions that the car goes into park for your safety.

So you can open your door and back up, just keep your seat belt on and your butt in the seat.

Your wife can lift her butt off the seat to look back, as long as her door is closed and her seat belt is on.

I don’t like nanny controls, but this logic seems sound.

You could buckle the seat belt before sitting down so it’s not restraining you but is buckled.

All cars prior to the past decade have operated this way. Very few accidents even though other cars will creep in forward or reverse... meanwhile you need to actively use the accelerator pedal to move in the Rivian.

Give me a "override nannies" button so I can move around efficiently.

Until then, I'll buckling the seatbelt and sitting on top trick the next time I'm solo-backing my camper and need to jump out/in 5+ times... I don't want to have to buckle up and shut the door. I will be fully in the vehicle and switching between drive/reverse/park, but I don't want it throwing on the brakes in the process. To be fair, I have the same complaint with our Macan.

Best case:
Pull past site
1. Get out to scout site / route
Back trailer to approximate location
2. Get out to check location
Adjust position
3. Get out to place leveling blocks under tires
back onto blocks
4. get out to drop jack
drive forward to clear tongue
5. get out to drop tongue

Sometimes, there may be things cameras don't catch. Like a large rock or boulder, tree, kid, another boat on the ramp, etc. near trailer. In certain conditions, I like to have the door open and look out the side while I'm backing up.

Good thing you're contrived b.s. example only ever happens on the driver side and never the front, rear, or passenger side.

Seems reasonable but why can't you do that with your seat belt on?

I can and will try that next time. Hopefully just be able to buckle belt behind me so I can lean more.
