2027 R1 Due in August - What's Changing?

According to the Rivian rep at my recent test drive, the 2027 R1S / R1T is due out next month. So I thought I would start a thread speculating on what changes we should expect. My starter random list of likely and unlikely upgrades

• Lidar/RAP1
• Infotainment upgrade
• R2 phone charger
• New wheels and colors
• Halo scroll wheels
• Two row option (R1S)

The only likely change is potentially the upgraded steering wheel with the halo scroll wheels....

I don't see us getting the haptic wheels any time soon, on account of the entirely different software ecosystem running in the R2. I don't think Rivian builds software modularly, so the code to run the haptic wheels is likely nestled very deep in the R2 operating system.

I actually see air suspension as a liability off road - I get that it is a cool party trick to raise the ride height, but inflating the air springs to the max actually hurts things like articulation and the ability of the suspension to absorb washboards, etc. I think the air suspension is really there more for complaint ride quality on the beat to shit roads we all have. And to be fair it does a good job of managing that task. That being said, I see eventually someone coming up with a coil over strut system to replace the Monroe air springs in the R1 platform once we get a bit more into the "out of warranty" territory on these...

Idk if I see it as a liabilty, as much as I see it as a tradeoff. You can't get 14.9 inches of ground clearance without adapative air suspension. if the ride height was permanently that high it would not handle well, put too much stress on certain components, and be dangerous at highway speed. You would also lose a ton of highway efficiency. And a permanently lower height would cause problems in off-road performance. I don't see how you can achieve favorable results in both on and off-road without it?

I'm in the "not much is going to change" camp...

We might see changes to the rear seating, as others have said. But I don't see Rivian investing much in product updates when they're focused on new products like the R2/R3....

They need to reduce powertrain options, so it's possible they drop the dual non-performance and potentially the tri motor options. To be profitable, they need to get the price point of these higher, since R2 will cover the lower cost tier.

The things I would love to see updated in an imaginary world:
1) Actual glove boxes (like the R2)
2) Better storage in the door cards, a spot for a decent sized water bottle (hydroflask)
3) Charge port moved to rear drivers side to match R2 (better Tesla SC connectivity)
4) Ability to choos
e a metal roof rather than glass, or a built in retractable screen

Here is what I learned about the 2027 R1 from a Rivian salesperson was truly honest with me in guiding my decision - told him I am undecided about buying a used 2025/2026 R1T or a new 2026 R1T with some incentives, or waiting for the 2027, learn about the differences, and then maybe buy a 2026 R1T with steeper incentives.

He said, everything is under tight wraps, no one knows what 2027 is, but it will be here in a couple of weeks, maybe mid-August. He also said there may be more updates to R1S versus R1T.Speculated that the halo wheel may make it and changes will be minor/under the hood.
incentives and selection of 2026 R1T/R1S may come down if you wanted to wait. but may be worth it in my case.
