I’m trying to decide between the Continental Terrain Contact HT or the Toyo Open Country AT 3 EV. I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews on the Toyos lately, and they’re snow rated which is great (I’m in Syracuse and we get a lot of snow). It’s significantly more expensive than the Contis though. Does anyone have experience with both to say if the price difference is worth it or not?

Consider the Pirelli XTM AT in 22”.

Better than the Contis.

Better how? Traction, tread life, noise? The price isn’t bad…

If AT and off roading is what you want, 22” (and less sidewall) is really not the wheel size to run. This new video by Outdoorauto covers it well.

Yes, understood. My R1S has 22s and I’m not replacing them anytime soon. The tread depth is more for snow than serious off roading (and don’t want to get a separate set of snow specific tires). Occasional poorly maintained gravel roads are probably the worst conditions they’ll see.

I have had the Contis and have the Pirelli XTM AT now. It’s new. They are so quiet (compared to other AT) it’s impressive. Tread is nice and deep.

I just put the Conti’s on my R1T in the beginning of August, have maybe 1200 miles on them.
they are quiet and grip is good but my efficiency has been worse. Not sure if they are just still new and need to break in or if they are just not as efficient as the old Pirelli’s.
they are much cheaper and when I got them I they had a promotion for a $110 gift card which I already received.
I also live in upstate NY but as I just got them they have not seen snow yet. I do go off roading a bit and they have been fine for that, I don’t go mudding or extreme rock crawling so can’t answer to those questions.
good luck!

If you’re not actually off-roading I’d consider the Nokian One, it’s an all season tire with good snow traction. I have the Continental AT tires and they are great, no complaints, but we don’t get as much snow in Missouri as I did growing up in Rochester NY, so not sure how they’d handle all of the lake effect snow. I’d be tempted to get a dedicated winter tire and run two sets if I was in Syracuse…

I’m running the Nokian Outpost nAT on my R1S tri. I did the research and these are the best performing AT tires in the snow. They are louder than I would like, but they perform well and I get good range.

I live in Tahoe and use these as my 3 season tire. We can get 2-3 feet of snow in one dump in November or April/May (likely) and I want the best performance in both snow and off-road toughness.

The nAT perform very good in the snow, but I still switch to studded snow tires (Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV studded) for Dec-Mar. I work at a ski hill and need to get there regardless of conditions.

I believe @twraps has the XTM. He had a good review of whichever one he has now, and they look fantastic IMO.
