I think the EDV should upgrade to have the whole autonomy suite including LiDAR on them and be a major "ground truth" fleet. I don't have any numbers, but I'm pretty sure a single EDV will drive way more routes and see way more edge cases than any of us drivers will experience in our lifetime. Put that on several thousand vehicles that practically go to every address in the country, and Rivian might have a robust autonomy platform in no time.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
According to Rivian, the larger battery brings a 30% increase in range, which should result in a real-world driving distance of over 200 miles. Meanwhile, AWD offers more power and improves traction in mud and snow.

Nice! I hope more companies get on board. I’m finally starting to see the Rivian Amazon EDV in northeast Columbus. We have tons of delivery vehicles in central Ohio that need to be converted.

That’s very true. Good points.

Getting closer to something that will be real nice for camper van conversions. 😊
I think Rivian would prefer to create a camper van from the ground up, not use an existing platform that’s specifically designed for delivery.

Maybe the R4 or R5 will be a van. They have to be careful announcing anything too soon though, as it could cause customers to stop buying their current lineup.

The article makes it seem like Amazon is getting the upgraded battery in it's vans... they agreed to pay more for substantially larger battery?

Agreed, a vehicle designed for people at the get go would probably be better for a camper van. But, I’ve seen some creative custom retrofits of cargo vans that were amazing.

Pretty sure R4/5 will not be a van, but you never know. Either way we’re due for a peak at some new product, it’s been nearly 2 years!

Our local UPS and fed ex delivery vans are super busy (who wants to drive over an hour to get a bag of dog food), drive far from home base on gravel and dirt roads in an lt1 v8 powered van. There is definitely a market for an upgraded EDV.
Personal vehicle wise, Vans are awesome. I’d generally rather have a van than a pickup (I don’t haul manure that often, and it rains a lot where I live). If I could have bought an R1V I totally would have. If it comes out I will trade up.

Agreed! Sprinter like van from Rivian, basically the EDV with more range, power and performance, would be amazing.

I'm certain the fleet here in Buffalo will appreciate that.
I'm in the southtowns that gets HAMMERED with snow in the winter months. The EDV's disappear around November and reappear around March or so. They go to AWD sprinter vans as the most common through the winter it seems.

Wonder if the bigger battery is to help fight the cold as well?!?!

The Amazon EDV drivers around here (Long Island) complain that on cold days they sometimes have to turn off the heat in order to complete their deliveries and still have enough battery to make it back to the distribution center. They will certainly welcome the larger battery which will give them more cabin heat, other than that they pretty much love the EDV's.

Seems like it based on the following from the Rivian Shareholder Letter,
"In addition to the EDV FWD standard battery pack variant already on the road, we are
developing new variants of the van with a larger battery pack and AWD. The larger battery
brings a 30% increase in range, while all wheel drive improves traction in conditions like
mud and snow. These new variants will expand EDV route coverage in Amazon's network."

The amount of these EDV's they sell to others is peanuts compared to Amazon, hopefully they can land a substantial PO with another last mile delivery company soon...assuming they have capacity to make more.
