Aside from what I would consider “normal” levels of wind noise from my R1S at speed (I’m not looking for/expecting absolute silence from these vehicles), there was a separate symptom of VERY loud howling wind noise that really only happened when I was driving in gusty winds, particularly crosswinds. For me, it localized to the top of the A-pillar both right and left.

When I looked at the top of the external A-pillar black plastic trip piece, there is a sizable gap where it meets the silver (for R1S) roof trim. I realized that wind entering this area can track straight beneath the first layer of molding on the door into the space between the body and door, and I suspected this was the case for my wind problems.

(this picture already shows film applied but arrows show where the gap for wind entry is)

I tested this by applying tape to completely close this gap in the a pillar, and the gusty winds noise disappeared.

I then tried to close the gap by putting in foam tubing, like others have used for noise reduction elsewhere, but the problem is that the space underneath the A-pillar trim is hollow, so there is no backing to prevent the foam from falling in over time.

I then made a template using tape, and using it as a guide cut out a small piece of paint protection film to cover the area. It’s worked great for me so far. Is it the prettiest thing? Probably not. But its subtle, unless you look for it, and I much prefer the silence anyways.

(hard to make it look clean inside door panel, but this area is hidden anyways)

Hope this helps some others.

I used gaffers tape on a loaner I had which had serious wind noise and solved it completely. I don't know what was worse, the wind noise or 25k miles on 20" OEM tires

I have a forest green R1T and used black electrical tape to seal all those gaps on the driver side A pillar. The service center put a new applique on the top, to even out a gap with the glass roof, and that helped too. It is pretty quiet now.

I want to give this a try. Wind is getting in and cause a black plastic trim piece to vibrate making a rattling noise.

the black trim came off and noise stopped if trim was jammed by door. Rivian replaced the piece that came loose. Rattle noise is back.

100% sounds like trim vibrating and causing rattle.

hopefully this stops wind coming in.

Great tips. Wind noise is pretty bad.

How is this holding up after a couple of weeks? Are varieties of PPF that aren't wet apply OK for this application? I've never used PPF before, but I'm very interested in this.

Would there be any issue covering most of the gaps around the windshield/pillar with this?

Mine is holding up just fine (I bought small length of Xpel 6”x60” from Amazon). It is wet apply, but I think this technique is very forgiving for small surface areas, in terms of bubbles, etc. And adhesive is very strong afterwards (I have Twraps on front end since purchase and that’s held up no problem also)
