Came home yesterday to find this ugly dent in the tailgate of my R1T. The truck was parked in driveway and It's a complete mystery as to how it happened. The dent looks as though it was done by a falling tree branch, but not only are there no trees within 50 feet of the driveway, there was also no detritus in the driveway or the surrounding lawn

Any guesses as to how this could have happened? As noted above, the truck was in the driveway, at least 25 feet from the road and with no vegetation of any sort nearby. I guess it could have been something like a thrown softball, if that ball had rolled around in the dirt and leaves beforehand.

You backed into something the previous drive and are just now discovering it.

This. I have a dent in my rear left fender just under the turn signal. Didn't notice it for quite a while and thought is was some dumbass in a parking lot. Now I think it may have been me backing into a neighbor's garage when exiting my garage in an narrow alley.

I have Gear Guard set to monitor when not at home. At home, all bets are off... :(

When I first got my R1T, I did not have it set that way, and it recorded me moving around the garage around the truck. A lot... And awful lot...

Recently, I did see someone letting their shopping cart run along the back of my tailgate a couple months ago. Nothing I could not buff out.

Sorry to see that, but at least it's a good candidate for PDR restoration.

Either as mentioned, you backed into a tree and didn't notice, or maybe someone came down your driveway and hit it with a branch then ran off?

Sorry to see this. Do you have cameras on your home? Was there a major storm in your area? No debris around your vehicle could be due to the storm blowing the debris away. I agree it does look like a PDR candidate.

You can spend $$$ and get it fixed, or wear it proudly so everyone thinks that you and the R1T work just like a "real" truck.

While it's certainly possible that I backed into something, the truck had been sitting in the driveway for about 48 hours with our other car behind it. Both my wife and I took the other car to run errands on several occasions over that time, requiring us to walk past the rear of the truck, and presumably at least glance at the tailgate. Neither of us noticed anything, and we would have been staring directly at the tailgate when pulling back into the driveway. Still, we're both getting older, and certainly weirder things have happened, so just not noticing can't be definitively ruled out.

Regardless of the cause, the damage is done and I'm hoping it's a candidate for PDR. My SWAG is the bill will be $750. A free prize to the person who comes closest with their estimate (Prize Is Right rules). Your choice of an outdoor pickleball or a classic sci-fi paperback, assuming I can get away with calling the book "previously read."

I've been wearing similar scars since January.

Mine is known event. I kicked the shit out of the tailgate in a fit of rage against this particular machine.

Looks like a pretty good PDR candidate. My guess around 350.

I’m in the camp that it happened somewhere else and you just noticed it. I have a habit of looking at my vehicles when I walk by them but I have missed things before, especially when in my driveway where I’m not really expecting anything.
