I am a current R1T Gen 2 owner and I love it, There have been some issues requiring 5-6 service center visits in the past two years however I am lucky to have the closest service center only 20 minutes away. My lease ends in November and I am torn between leasing an R2 or moving to something else.
The R1T has been by far the best designed, most fun, and most useful vehicle I have ever driven. I'd love to stay with Rivian, however if for some reason they were to close the service center around here it would make the leasing far less desirable.
Where I am located I see very few R1S or R1T, I've probably encountered 4-5 in the pst 2 years. The service center always seems very busy though, just have concerns that they may relocate to a more Rivian-heavy area.
Thoughts? Have there been any examples of service centers closing?

I have no way of knowing, but I can’t see them closing a service center as there are so few already. With the success of the R2 demand is only going to go up. The closest service center to me is about 2.5 hours away. It’s a hike to get to, but rarely needed.

If any has closed you’d find/see threads about it. Yet there are none. Will any close in the future? Will you win the lottery? Will the economy crash? Who knows. As the brand has just started delivering the lower priced mainstream product that is R2, Rivian needs more service capacity, not less. And it has steadily opened more SCs since’22.

no, don't think Rivian has pulled out of any markets at this point. in the very early days I think there were a few temporary facilities while the permanent locations were being completed but that's a different matter altogether.

Current Niagara Falls SC has to be this way. It's SOOOOO poorly invested in compared to the relatively close Rochester facility.

For Rivian, this is their key make/break moment similar to Tesla in 2018. They have 1 SC for every 15 that Tesla has. They need to ramp R2 production and delivery significantly over next 4-5 months. SCs should double every 2 years or so:
2021 - 6 SCs *
2022 - 12
2023 - 56
2025 - 100
2027 - 200 (add 50 this year)
2029 - 400
2031 - 800
2033 - 1600
* - I wonder if Rivian can do more with less (compared to Tesla). Anecdotally, I’d say Teslas require 2-3 times more service than Rivian (on average)
