Hey all. Debating between R1T Dual Max and R1T Tri. Truck will be used for towing our Airstream and as a daily driver. To help with the decision, I’ve been playing with ABRP to determine the best options. Oddly enough, for our usual pilgrimage to Florida in the Spring, ABRP says Tri will spend less time charging than Dual Max. How can that be? Is ABRP reliable? Thanks for the insights.

I would review the settings in ABRP.

I find it to be fairly accurate, I tend to get 2.2 miles/kWh on trips so for my R1S I have reference consumption set to 450 watts/mile and have enough trip miles on my R1S to be very comfortable with it’s numbers.

Just not sure there is enough data out there for the default settings for those vehicles and you do not have the vehicles available to connect ABRP to get live data.

ABRP does a good job at estimating based on your actual driving (like Rivian Navigation does and NOT like the “fuel gauge” tha’ts purely percentage based). I would expect they are aggregating based on actual experience. In a way it seems like ABRP is Rivian’s ElectriFi. I’ve signed up for their annual sub and it gives me a lot of the data I had been accustomed to getting from Volvo App on our 2017 XC90 T8. Sucks it’s not been integrated into Rivian App or the vehicle. Would be nice to get it via CarPlay especially considering I’m paying for the ABRP sub which includes it. ?

Thanks both.

My ABRP settings are identical between the Dual Max and the Tri, including the large trailer option.

But I think I’ve figured out why the Tri does better sitting with the charging stops data a bit more. The Tri has to make more charge stops due to the smaller range. As a result, it’s also stopping the charge at a lower SoC which means it spends less time at the slow end of the curve.

While that could point to the Tri being a good option for towing, the Dual Max is likely still the better choice as most of our camping trips are not as long as Quebec to Florida and the extra range will mean some trips won’t even require a charge stop.

I was just trying to find a way to justify the Tri. ;-)

The only hardware that I could imagine would make a difference is better cooling/thermal management. Not really rivians strong suit yet though so I guess time will tell.

Rivian owns ABRP.

I agree that Tri in Conserve mode is close to Dual Max range. However, is Conserve mode not disabled when plugging in a trailer? If so, then the range difference becomes larger. But do tell me if I'm wrong and Tri now can keep Conserve mode while towing, which would change things for me. I didn't think so as Conserve disables the rear motors I thought which likely wouldn't be enough power for towing. That said again, correct me if I wrong (which I hope I am!).

Also, if I may ask, what's the payload # for your Tri? Rivian's web site suggests all Gen 2 Max Packs are at 1764 but shouldn't the Tri be lower given the extra motor?

Looks like the IOS latest ABRP (5.7.4) update has lost all of the RAN locations.

People may want to hold off on this update if RAN is the network you prefer.
