it may be a synthetic material, but I would call it "carpet" even if it's a more outdoorsy version.
Fair enough. Same as the article, I wouldn't call it carpet either, but I can see where different regions might have different translations. Being the OP mentioned using all weather mats to protect the "carpet", it led me to believe he was referring to a material that stains and traps dirt easily. Synthetic material should be much easier to keep clean.

Strange, I looked at Rivian's website, but I couldn't find mention of anything related to the vehicle's interior floor covering, except for the floor mats.

I wasn't aware the R1S comes with carpet. I know the R1T doesn't, unless they've changed along the way. I thought they were using a heavy vinyl, but I may be wrong about that as well. Anyone know?

"Rivian has avoided using carpet, instead it’s using an easy-to-wash material that won’t stain. The company wants you to get this car dirty, and then just wipe it down before you start all over again."
A video review called it carpet and it was not vinyl like a Bronco floor, so carpet seemed appropriate even if it is a little more outdoorsy than normal car carpet. I would hope it is more robust since this is marketed as an outdoor vehicle.

Gear guard upgrade may end up as a part of a paid service.

I can see medical establishment referring to this Rivian owner condition as FATH (Frozen Ass, Toasted Head). I have never experienced ventilated seats but since most who have rave about it and my wife has issues with forced air, this is the only feature that has a bit of FOMO for me.

I agree On Tonneau cover. When it does work, it sounds like it is being tortured and begging to be put out of it’s misery.

BT Speaker is dead weight most of the time.

I am going with R1S Explore. Rivian has to intentionally screw up the sound system on Explore so that is not good enough for me. I doubt they would do that on a $70K SUV. Controlling the noise is a much bigger factor in my experience of sound.

I like as much of the interior in front of me dark and mat so Explore dash works for me nicely. A good contrast with Ocean Coast as well.

All that said, I am far enough in back of the line that I am hoping to have an educated decision about the trims and options by comparing them in person before my purchase.
I completely forgot about the upgraded sound system in my breakdown. Vehicles as a sound stage are tricky and from what I understand pickup trucks may be more difficult. I doubt both sound systems, Explore/Adventure will be less than acceptable. The Meridian sound system would not be worth it to me on its own. My state's rebates are helping my justify paying for ventillated seats and the potential dashcam/sentry features.

Less is more. Especially in a 1st gen/ 1st year vehicle. At the end of the day - get what makes YOU happy.

Are the brake calipers yellow on the Explore? I thought so but the recent video from iwanttesla implies it is Adventure/LE only.

One more reason to go Explore for me.

Based on the configurator it looks like the calipers are the same on all models. The yellow interior accents are what are listed as a differentiator between Adventure/Launch and Explore on the "Compare" feature on Rivian's site. Maybe that is what he was confused by. I guess we don't know for sure until we see an Explore package next year (aka not s00n).

Main factors for Adventure for me are:
  1. Timing (I have an early LE)
  2. Ventilated seats
  3. Sound system
The rest is nice to have but not essential for me.

I'm on the fence about the tonneau cover - retractable sounds nice but I am thinking about a camper top or aftermarket solution like a Diamondback, in which case it's just vestigial and I'd rather have the manual cover that I could just remove.

Main reason I am going Adventure (other than delivery timing now), is I wanted the ventilated seats, and upgraded audio. I thought I read somewhere on this forum the Explore doesn't come with the bluetooth speaker either, and while I don't care about that, I didn't see that stated on Rivians website, and makes me wonder what else may not be included. Also, do they even have real world Explore package to see real world pictures of? When I've bought cars in the past I have regretted not getting the top trim to save a few thousand dollars, I want to avoid that with this. As others have stated, I don't really care about the power tonneau either.
