I understand the contract and hindsight is 20/20. The point is that having a contract puts you at risk at losing money for being diligent. Folks need to realize that!!! I learned the hard way, and I don’t want other to have the same experience!!!
I could have waited and saved $3000 plus interest on that $3000.

This is true for just about everything you order. The contract also protects you from price hikes, and Rivian honored that with many reservation holders, myself included. I would say that since Rivian honored all those pre-orders to their detriment, I would expect them to hold their customers to the same standards.

No, that vehicle will have to go to the shop where the same discount the OP wants will apply. They aren't going to match the order to someone else with a reservation. So Rivian will be out an extra 3K if they allow that.
That has nothing to do with my comment. The vehicle is not sold. I can walk away and lose my deposit. Rivian can increase the cost also. It is not so.d. So if Rivian can increase the price, they should also be willing to decrease the price until it is sold. Fair to both parties.

Worst car pursing experience I have ever had.

If I can buy from shop I will. I will not cancel customer order until shop order incomplete. They make an extra $1000 and have a pissed off customer. Bad business. No one is going to stay with original order. After losing $1000 deposit I still save $2750. Friend gets $750. So Rivian saves $250 and pisses off custom. Foolish business model.

No way to justify all the work, hassle and frustration over $250.

You said you could pay cash many times over. You can’t credibly make that statement and then complain because you're choosing to pay interest. Youre only paying interest because you believe it is in your benefit, that the money in your pocket can earn more then the interest penalty.

Sure, you could have also invested the entire sum and not bought the car at all. That's called an opportunity cost and it applies to any financial transaction.

The 1K deposit was a contract. Why do you think you don't have to honor your commitments to your benefit? If Rivian raised the price on all shop cars by 3K would you be pissed off if they raised their price on your preorder? Of course, you would.

2025 Rivian R1T - Large. Delivered on November 23, 2024.
Occupation
Retired
I initially shopped the Shop. We were going to buy a Standard build, but gauged the mileage we customarily drive on weekend errands, and realized that the Large build would better suit us. After test driving an R1T in Boston, we fell in love with the truck and ordered a Large battery configuration with just enough amenities for us; dynamic sun roof, power tonneau and the light Ocean interior, along with Rivian Blue. After about 5 weeks since reserving the build, I got a text and immediately a call that our truck was being manufactured, and I got the VIN number to start the paperwork. We're scheduled to take delivery at the end of this month!

The problem we had with the Shop builds for the R1T-Large were the added "goop" and $$$ to the builds; things that we just did not need. Camp speaker, off-road tires, Rivian's upgraded sound system, etc. along with not getting the amenities we really were looking forward to. All in all, very happy with the process and looking forward to taking delivery.

Thanks for the econ lesson professor.
Folks need to know the contract
Thanks for the econ lesson professor.
I had my reasons for signing the contract. I did not read all the fine print and most people don’t either. The assumptions I made were false, and as a result made me feel a particular way. I want to make sure that others don’t make the same assumptions that I did so they can not have this feeling as well.

I’m in the exact same boat. They will not apply the $1000 to purchase of shop vehicle, but you still say $2000, plus $750 for referral program on shop. Must add referral at check out.

You have no incentive to cancel the prior order until you know the new order is complete. I went through and validate info needed. And the vehicle I wanted was gone. This has happen to me before.

I will watch, order from shop, then cancel custom order.

I would never just over pay by $2000, or $2750 (plus my friend gets $750).

I understand not refundable but they should just keep customers happy and price match until the vehicle is purchased. They have the right to increase price, why should I have the right to decrease price?

Not a big deal, but a frustrating buying experience for me. I current have a custom offer that has been out there for 2 weeks. I will most likely find a shop vehicle and purchase, than camel custom order. I. Not canceling until I have a new car purchased. I can let them build it, ship it, inspect it and then cancel. Just weird they do t price match until vehicle is purchased.
OP did $3k non-refundable deposit, which sounds like the tri-max deposit when it first came out. It's now refundable.

It is absolutely a fact that I have cash on hand to pay off the the Rivian many times over and investments all over the place…so I could if I desired do what I said it’s therefore credible. I don’t pay cash has infinite reasons.

My $1000 is not refundable. All good. I’m sure I will get a vehicle and it will be great.

Honestly, if Rivian would have come out 5-10 years ago before I retired, I would have moved heaven and Earth to place an order, and I would have accepted any compromise to take delivery ASAP, click/auth contracts be damned. That was how impulsive I was back then. For my 50th Birthday, I went out and bought a Honda CR-Z (the two-seater) WITHOUT THE HUSBANDS APPROVAL. Only after driving it home did I realize that neither of us could comfortably fit in the passenger seat (we're both 6'3"). He used it as his commuter car for a few years and we unloaded it.

I was seriously jonesing for a Rivian for a while (since seeing the prototype at the NY Intl. Auto Show way back). My husband said "No! The company has no track record. Wait." He was right; calmer heads prevailed. The reviews started coming in; generally positive experiences with the vehicles and the company. In September I discovered we had a large pool of equity in my 2019 Nissan Frontier that could be used to offset the lease, and I revisited the Rivian site. This time around I made the choice of asking my husband what he thought about the Rivian and what he wanted before pushing the order button. That stopped all my second guessing. If he would have said "No." I was fully prepared to walk (begrudgingly) away. He didn't. We talked through every option and built our truck, both of us are on the title, registration and loan.

All of the above was a life lesson that came to me late in life (I'm in my 60's now). For what it's worth, I never beat myself up over making stupid-ass decisions (like the CR-Z). For good or bad, they served a purpose in that immediate, and there was some gain or satisfaction in the processes. Enjoy your truck! In the larger scheme of life, you earned that right!
