I'm often standing at my car for five or ten seconds waiting for the PAAK to register so I can open the door. I wish I could tap a capacitive button somewhere to force it open sometimes.

A button like that would also solve the passive locking issue; I want to get out of the car when it's not in the garage and quickly tap a button on the door to lock it. Pulling out a phone to lock or unlock it is definitely first-world annoying.

Not sure if this is a certainty just yet, but I've had much better PaaK performance unlocking the vehicle even with the phone in my pocket since clearing a bunch of open apps on my phone and restarting the Rivian app. Hoping it is a trend.

Maybe that is why I have good luck with mine. I close the app a lot at home so it does not keep unlocking when I’m walking around the garage.

For those that are interested, you can buy an additional key fob by calling and ordering it. I have a service appointment in 8 weeks (!) and they are supposed to have it for me and will program then.

Another example of redesigning something and missing the mark. Key fobs have worked very well for decades; same for touch buttons on the handles.

Initially I thought the key card would be cool -but its actually quite weird - hold it here to get in, then hold it here to start. Would be cool if it stayed in my wallet or pocket.

Not sure this should land in the "1st world" problems or in the "give them time" buckets. This is a basic function that gets used a lot, others' have figured it out and deployed it for decades.

Seems to much worse for me since that latest software update. But it's also random in that sometimes it unlocks very quickly and at other times I feel like the whole world is watching me stand there and wait for it to unlock.
My PAAK worked perfectly until the last update. 75% of the time Im just standing there waiting for it to unlock. At home when it's unlocked, if I get in to drive off, its taking at least 5-10 seconds to recognize that Im sitting there with my foot on the brake before letting me shift.

I hate key fobs and hate carrying keys in my pocket. PAAK has worked well for us in our three Teslas and in the Rivian.

I wonder if I can sell the FOB that came with our R1S? I would sell for a $50 discount! Can it be reprogrammed?

It can but has to be at a service center. Can’t be added like a phone.

I would keep it. I use mine for service appointments or going to the car wash around the corner from my house.

Ben Affleck's problems are not mine. And TBH, I don't care what his problems are. For the rest of us... a few seconds of inconvenience is #firstworldproblems that people are making too big of a deal of.
Its a step, really two steps backwards. Rivian considers them self a tech company, they needed to deliver on easy stuff like this. It’s a $100,000 car with a $28,000 key system. Just because they did a good job with pre-civil war electric motor technology, we don't have to overlook the myriad issues from the design team thinking they’re smarter than Henry Ford

since you’re new to ownership, it may be worth going back and reading the 45000 other threads on this exact same issue that have been posted over the past two years.
it is what it is.
“ it is what it is”…… exactly and that is something that needs to be fixed? Not trivialized.

Mine works just fine. Good job with the pre civil war PAAK Rivian.

This is almost a year old thread. There have been many updates that have improved the locking and unlocking.
Thanks. Whatever the updates have been, my (anecdotal) experience has been it is still an issue that needs to be remedied as recent as 2 hours ago. All the issues listed above are still affecting my R1S so I’m not sure of all the fixes that were put in place, but whatever they were, it’s still an issue on my vehicle built in November 2023. So hopefully many more updates are coming. but I standby my statement …..if the Rivian team wasn’t smarter than Henry Ford they could’ve just gone with pre-existing key/fob/PAAK technology and saved many of us the frustration. Luckily, somehow it didn’t affect your vehicle.

Exactly. If anyone is still having a problem with PAAK it’s probably either an issue with the phone or a hardware issue on the Rivian which requires a service ticket. The phone (manufacturer, OS, settings, etc.) is a significant variable which makes troubleshooting difficult.

But demanding to see the management is so satisfying! /s
