I'm shopping for an electric scooter to carry in my R1T's gear tunnel. It seems like this would be a good complement to the vehicle. E.g., I often find that when I'm charging while on a road trip, getting to a restaurant or shop that I'd like is more of a schlep than I'm up for. Hopping onto a scooter seems just the thing.

Anyway, I wonder if any of you folks have made such a purchase and if you have any helpful suggestions. I would appreciate learning from your insights! Thanks!

Have the name of your orthopedic surgeon, among others, in your contact list. The injury rate is up there.

Yeah, that's a consideration! I think I've already paid for two college educations for the kids of orthopods. Since my goal is short-distance travel in non-urban locations, I think I'm out of the highest-risk category. But you are certainly correct that the risk remains high. (I was a bike messenger in NYC many years, and many injuries, ago.)

I've considered something similar. I used to own a Segway Mini, that's another option to consider. I am doing more road trips where I find myself near-ish to something I'd like to go to. Too far to walk, and in places with little to no Uber/Lyft coverage.

Injuries...bah. I've been on a motorcycle at 182.7 and have half a dozen wheelie tickets in my history. Scooter...meh.

My first EV was an electric unicycle (EUC). I still have it, and it fits nicely in the Rivian’s frunk. It’s a KingSong S18. You have to learn how to ride these things, but when you have, they’re great: Small, fast and very portable, with decent range. (They’re heavy, but in most situations you can roll them along under their own power.) You do need protection when riding, though: helmet and a full set of pads, because you’re going to fall off every now and again.

Have I already asked what bike? I had a Blackbird during (and after) college many years ago, there's a rumor out there that I maxed it out too 😬
Holy shit, what a coincidence. That's it. I also started the largest forum for that bike. I recently got a new one that's basically a crate find. Stored for over a decade, 1038 miles on it. I stole it cheap. Spent days detailing it down to the radiator and all metals polished.

Back on topic, OP can take blame/credit for me getting a new toy, and I stole it also. I was inspired to look at scooters on Craigslist, and found this listed for $400 (!). The guy said it was too scary to ride, which is my mating call really. No such thing as too much power.

Ad:
My dumb mistake is your stroke of luck. I bought this generic Segway in October, 2025 and rode it less than one mile. I guess I am too old to feel comfortable scooting around so fast. I haven’t even removed the plastic film from the info screen or the foot deck. It comes with the original packaging.

Wow, that's awesome, congrats on the find - what a beauty! It makes sense you "only" got to 182.7, you clearly don't have the fastest color. Both of mine were black 😉. I had a '97 (carb'd) - when that got totaled when an RV hit me (ouch!), I got a '99 (injected and even smoother!) that I had until it was totaled by somebody else hitting me (some guy turned left across my lane, never even looked where he was going). I sure do miss them, they were great bikes!

Congrats on the "scooter" too - that looks pretty neat! It's somehow bigger than it looks in the Amazon ad - I think it's the huge wheels that make the proportions look like it should be knee-high like the Segway S2. Clearly, it's not. Looks fun!

I’ve pondered it on and off. Usually when IG’s ad algorithms try to brainwash me into spending. But I just can’t get past the toy-like nature of scooters. Red Bull F1 has a very cool scooter but also ridiculous price.

Crap!! I got rear-ended on my XX by an R6, but somehow never got any major close calls from cagers. I originally had a 2000.

We camp off grid a bit, so this machine will be useful. And fun. I've already challenged some of my off road crew to doing shots and jumping a cactus on it. It is big, a bit to load, but easy for two people. It was easy for me to remove solo. Loading, dunno. I may rig a way to use the steering handle on the tailgate to guide/slide it in. Also if the battery is easy to remove it makes a big difference.

toy-like nature of scooters.
Um, that's bad? Stop growing up man!

I accept both blame and credit, but not responsibility--your concussion/fracture/sprain, your problem! 😜 But that thing sure does look like fun!

The newly-announced Rivian-adjacent e-bike definitely looks nice, as well. But it's too big. I think they missed an opportunity. A scooter-sized item is an accessory to the truck rather than a distinct entity.

Yeah, that's a niche thing looking for a buyer. My requirement for an R1T travel accompaniment was fitting under the PTC or at least the cargo rails. It would be nicer to have a much smaller machine, but being that most of my camping is on dirt and sand, the off-road machine makes sense. It's a compromise for sure.

I assume you know that there are a ton of fold-up electric bicycles made for exactly this purpose? They are light, small, short range. Something to pop out of a trunk for a 5-10 mile ride. A friend does this and loves his, I think it's an Aventon.

If your body can handle sport bike ergos, it can handle long walks. Or then there’s this.
