While I know Rivian is struggling to get all of the earliest Pre-orders produced and delivered, I was wondering if anyone had heard any updates on availability of the 400 mile range "Max Pack" battery? I'm a late pre-order (Oct 21') so I don't expect a vehicle (or even any communication) for another 12-18 months at the earliest but it would be nice to at least get a status or updated "guestimate" timing.

Has anyone heard anything?

Thanks!

I've only seen in articles (which I don't believe any of them) that Max pack is coming for 2023.

I don't believe them because most of them said it in the recent spade of articles on R1S - which Rivian said no max pack. So who knows.

Battery technology is changing very fast though, so maybe by Mid2023 they might have an option using different tech.

Rivian has been pretty successful converting max-pack orders into reg pack orders just because they keep pushing the delivery estimates out further and further. At this point, there may not be many "max-pack or nothing " orders left which only enables Rivian to delay the max-pack release even further. Who knows.. the max-pack could become Rivian's Cybertruck... something on indefinite hold.

Copy...thanks...that's kinda what I figured. My concern is that they'll get so wrapped up in getting current large pack orders filled and rolling out the R1S that Max Pack will just continue to get shoved to the right.

Oh well, the longer they wait, the longer that $$$ stays in my pocket (even though it continues to be worth less and less - but that is a different issue :(). At least I got in under the Pre-1 March pricing - we'll see how long that holds...

Well, they haven't contacted my asking if I'd take the smaller pack...I'd be tempted at this point and save another $10K. My phone just doesn't ring I guess... :)

Converting by force. Take what we give you or don't buy - even though we said you could have what you want - is kind of a crappy practice in my book. That being said, I'm more worried about buy R1S now,and a year from now or 2 years from now, suddenly battery tech is giving us 600 miles in 10 min charge.

I originally had a MAX pack, but switched to large pack. I was assigned a guide a few weeks ago and asked about the MAX pack. The guide confirmed that they are still on schedule to deliver max pack pre-orders first half of 2023. I took that to mean that they would START delivering them in June of 2023, the latest possible time.
I also asked if Rivian had produced a single Max pack yet, and the guide could not confirm.

Not directed at @RivRev ... the above means absolutely nothing because Rivian has shown time and again that the guides are clueless regarding production delays and corporate will literally wait till the last day of the estimate window to announce delays. When they say "on schedule to deliver max pack pre-orders first half of 2023" that very likely means on June 30th 2023 we could get a max-pack "delay" announcement .

Max pack or bust! I don't tow often, but it's the only really viable way to get my racecar to the track and home again without worrying about charging. I still haven't gotten any delivery estimate, but the last investor call still mentioned 2023 to start max pack deliveries. Personally, I'm hoping that one of the things they're waiting for on max pack is the change to an 800V capable pack for charging. I can't imagine charging a 180 kWh pack at only 200 kW and it would make sense to go 800V to get closer to 300-350 kW peak charging rates. It's also possible we'd see the V2H solution come with max pack, as anyone with that much battery capacity in their garage would probably love the ability to use it as a "generator" for their home during a power outage. Now Rivian hasn't actually said Max Pack will come with either of those options, but it could help explain the delay vs just conserving battery cell resources for Large Pack deliveries. But that can't be discounted since for every 3 Max Pack trucks they build, they could've built 4 Large Pack trucks instead with roughly the same number of cells.

From a CS chat just now. It doesn't provide any additional information:

"Max pack is slated for 2023, and no additional information has been provided to us."

My best guess is that we'll get an update on Max Pack delivery estimates by the Fall. If it's delayed much beyond 1st half of 2023, I hope Rivian does the right thing and gives Max pack reservation holders some priority delivery on Large packs, but given the current lottery system, I doubt they can pull that off technically right now.

Personally, I'm planning on waiting for the Max pack (and Ocean Coast) but if either are delayed beyond 1st half of 2023, I'd take a Large pack and Black Mountain. Just wish they'd let us know either way.

I've been driving EV's since 2011 and while the Large pack range is adequate for my regular needs, my concern is about battery degradation living in a hot climate (Phoenix, AZ) and the range hit from my preferred all-terrain tires. Considering the cost of the vehicle, especially at pre-3/1 pricing, and how long I plan to keep the R1T, I would really like a Max pack battery, but I don't want to wait another year+.

My neighbor who works at Rivian Irvine in system testing, recently changed his pre-order from an R1S to a Max Pack R1T. My guess is he is confident that it will be delivered in early 2023. Hopefully he will have a little more insight when I speak to him (bug him again) later.

I can't imagine charging a 180 kWh pack at only 200 kW and it would make sense to go 800V to get closer to 300-350 kW peak charging rates.

The difference I see here is that the optimal range is up to about 80% of a pack with the first 50% charging very fast on the 350kw chargers, before they drop below the curve. So that means that you get to 50% of a 400m range in 15min, 200m. OR with a 135kw pack, you might get to 150 in that time. Towing still cuts that in half.

50% of 135 = 150m/75m towing
50% of 180 = 200m/100m towing 25% difference

80% = 200/100 towing
80% = 300/150 towing = 50% difference

It's HUGE for those people towing or who need the range.

I ended catching up with my neighbor as he pulled in from work in a zebra wrapped R1T (yesterday he drove a green LE R1T home). My neighbor is involved with system testing. He never knows what system he is testing before hand and isn't involved with development per se, he mainly gives data on whether it works or not. I specifically asked about the Max Pack R1T's. He said of all the R1T's and R1S's he has driven (I've seen dozens in his driveway over the last 2 years), he has never driven or seen a Max Pack truck. That doesn't mean they do not exist, but they have not made it far enough along to where his department is involved with testing.

He did mention something about a 2nd Gen chassis that is probably coming down the pipe soon. Should have strength improvements, possible change in the alloy. He's not 100% sure, but he believes that it will just be introduced to the current production line. He says the trucks are just getting better and improvements are being added all the time. He he stresses that I shouldn't worry about the wait, because the longer it takes the better the R1S will be when I get it.

For what it’s worth… I’m a max pack holder since late 2018 and was just contacted by my guide to confirm my configuration and delivery address. I’m not sure why they would do that so early (I was given a 1H23 window). Maybe they are simply planning for supply much further out, or just gauging interest. I did ask if there were any updates on max pack deliveries and was told there are none, but I can expect an update by the end of summer.
