No regrets here. Covered some rugged trails in the Rockies this weekend and felt the clearance and approach angles built into the design have me covered for everywhere I'm qualified to drive. I'm more worried about rashing the rims than scraping the bottom...

Really appreciate the responses everybody! Going to keep the current configuration and looking forward to hearing when it arrives in the Brooklyn service center to pick up.

Don't know if this truck had the underbody, and glad the car behind didn't get hurt

i would have regretted not getting it. i didnt have it configured on my R1T as i didnt think i'd be doing much/any off-roading but picked one from the Shop that had it. now that i have it i have a lot more peace of mind doing even light trails. if it was an ICE, i defintely wouldnt have gotten it. its a BEV and a first time BEV so i dont regret getting it to protect the batteries.

Good question! Would be good to hear if any damage was sustained by the riv.

In the comments OP says the Rivian has front end damage. No mention of underbody damage though.

My experience is the underbody protection is worth it. My wife just called me yesterday while driving to say that a really large rock had kicked up and hit the underbody while driving. She said it was similar to the rock that destroyed the oil pan on our suburban last year. Given we have the shield, I told her to keep driving and I would check it out. Looked at it when she arrived and it has a huge scuff/scratch, but otherwise all good. Not saying it would have been damaged without the shield, but was nice that I could trust that the rock wouldn’t be imbedded in the battery pack when she got back.

First, my R1S, in process of setting the delivery date currently has RUS. I had also configured it when I first placed preorder with RUS. The vehicle will most likely see very little off road and definitely never any rock crawling under my ownership.

Having said that, if the bottom of the electric vehicles is susceptible to road damage due to debris or road rocks, then there are enough EVs out there now from just about every make, that we all would hear about them. About the only time we hear battery damage on the road is associated with accidents and fire. If that's the case, RUS is not going to make any difference.

In other words, it would be a very rare occurrence if any damage were to occur without RUS. And if the impact is hard enough to damage the battery floor, I doubt that RUS would prevent it. It may not be as bad, but still would penetrate and damage the batteries, if impacted that hard.

So why did I get it? I just wanted it. Just like I wanted 22" instead of 21" wheels.
