Is there a way to prevent this from coming up every time I open the app (other than the obvious solution of changing location access to always)?

I have always assumed that giving the app access to location - always will result in increased battery drain on the phone. Does anyone know if that is correct?

Same boat. Agreed - annoying. I don’t use proximity on my phone, so it doesn’t need to know where I am.

What would be increased drain for you? I’m set to location-always and see 1-2% per day.

Home Assistant, ElectraFi and the vehicle itself. I’m currently at 1.7% drain since 12am this morning.

I don’t think it results in excessive phone drain. It’s less than 1% on my iPhone 16 Pro and I leave it set to always. What do you have yours set to?

Thanks. That is not much drain on the phone.

I have been using the setting - while using the app. When I want proximity, I open the app. Not sure why they have to "remind" me to set it to always every time I open the app, when I don't want that functionality.

I miss interpreted your question and gave you my Rivian battery drain not my phone. :)

I haven't paid my phone drain any attention and agree it can’t be much, I haven’t noticed any.

Pro or pro max? I just picked up the pro max ...old phone was 2 years old and Pixel is good for pictures and not so good with video.

Why would the app always need location? I tend to prefer only while using and that's if the app needs location access to function. Otherwise, I don't give access to location at all. I also don't let them track my app usage either.

Curious what phone you have.

I have iPhone 14 Pro Max IOS 18. Have app set to location services while using app and it does not prompt me to change.

I rarely close the app but when I do and restart it no prompt

I just go with the Pro now after getting the Max in the past and being annoyed with carrying it around in my pockets. I upgraded from a 14 Pro which was perfectly fine but Verizon had some sweet deals for trading it in.

With every other app I set it to “only while using” but I use always with the Rivian app.

One thing to keep in mind is if you want to take advantage of Gear Guard Live when it comes out, that will require “precise location” to be turned on. It looks like you can still leave the “while using app” set and take advantage but it’s hard to know yet if that is accurate.

Gear Guard Live Cam
Gear Guard Live Cam allows you to view live video streams from the Gear Guard cameras on your Rivian mobile app (version 2.14.0 or later). You can initiate Live Cam while the vehicle is parked. You can check on the vehicle spontaneously, or in response to a notification from the Gear Guard alarm system. Use the Rivian mobile app to:

  • View live camera feeds when the vehicle is in Park.
  • Receive notifications and review camera feeds when the alarm is triggered.
  • Switch between camera feeds for any of the Gear Guard cameras.
NOTE
Gear Guard Live Cam requires you to have a Connect+ subscription and to opt into precise location sharing with the Rivian mobile app.
Running a virtual private network (VPN) client on your mobile device may prevent your ability to view live camera feeds.

Thanks for that it’s good to know. I don’t mind Rivian accessing my location but it’s just crazy how some of these apps ask for all this access.

my credit union was asking to access my location all the time. I said hell no ?

Does anyone know if that is correct?
Absolutely not correct. Location awareness is far smarter than that, and uses background processes that are already keeping location updated for the system. It's not a new intensive process until you run the app and it requests fast, precise updates.

Thank you for that info. With Always Access, is my location continuously being transmitted to anyone? None of my apps are set to have Always Access partially for privacy concerns.

You can't tell by that setting alone. All that setting does is allow the app to access the device location from the OS. What the app choses to do with that data (keep it local or transmit it elsewhere) is up to the app developer. It's probably safest to assume, though, that it is being transmitted somewhere.
