That would result in at least 90% fewer posts per day. I mean…some people here don’t even own a Rivian and will still create an account so they can bitch about the absence of CarPlay…
So true. I mean in all seriousness, it seems forum members have very strong opinions on AA/CP, and more recently, Connect+. Hopefully EV Play allows people on both sides of the aisle to get along.

Irrespective of my personal level of interest in the product, the innovative character of it is really cool. I do wonder about the warranty implications even with whatever laws are out there in various states about making changes to vehicles. If I we’re Rivian I’d be giving you a phone call to express interest in the success of this. So bravo Alex!!
Thank you for that. I feel like all of us owners are innovators to some degree. Willing to take a chance on a startup and help pioneer the EV effort. It just seems lately that EV manufacturers, including Rivian, are in a race to the bottom with respect to price. For me, it has always been about value. I'm willing to pay more if the features stand out from the competition. I remember deciding between a Ram 1500 and a Ford F-150 back in my younger days. The Ram was cheaper but I went with the Ford mainly because the available aftermarket ecosystem was way stronger. Lifts, light bars, wheels, shift curve chips, etc. I'm hoping Rivian sees the light here because the preferred outcome is that we collaborate vs. play entering into a long cat & mouse game. I would also consider it a win if they implemented all these features natively.

I was expecting a third party solution to materialize to fill this gap with Rivian (as it did for Tesla) sooner or later, and wishing you the best of luck in getting it finalized and to market.
Thank you!

I'm confused. RJ, the world's smartest, most humble and nicest man, has repeatedly said that all the noise about Rivian not supporting CarPlay is overblown and that we don't need it. And as a Rivian fan boy (and owner) I believe everything he says, why on earth would anyone go to all this trouble to develop a work-around for it? Maybe the guy doing isn't aware of all the really cool lock sounds our vehicles can make?
Hoot hoot. ;)

If you make this happen please ask admin to change your name from "EV Play - Alex" to "The Dude."
I like it - I would just have to learn how to bowl.

I assume this is similar to the carplay mmi boxes for BMWs. I had one in a 2011 335, and it worked pretty well. A little wonky sometimes, but I'm an IT guy, nothing I'm not used to.
I actually had one of those back in the day, it was what partly inspired me.

Congrats on your work...it was only a matter of time. I hope you get compensated well for your investment into this project!
Thank you!

I will think of you kindly, and often, if this works out.
Much appreciated.

I would love an a-WOO-gah lock sound. Just kind of technologically bookend-ish to one of the planet’s most technologically advanced vehicles. 🙂

This sounds like something that might void the warranty. You can’t just hack the infotainment without bringing attention to Rivian.

Also why would you create a whole separate infotainment? It’s one thing to add AA or CP. And how is one person going to maintain this over time? Is this going to be a side hobby or a real business?

As for why I would create a separate infotainment system -- I'm definitely all ears if you have a better way to add all these amazing features and apps.

One person is not going to maintain this over time. This will become a real business. I own my own company with numerous employees and have owned numerous technology companies in the past. Not my first rodeo.

I like it! I would hope that at some point Rivian allows us to customize the lock sound. If not, I'll look in to what it would take to add this to EV Play. Anyone know where the external speaker is located and how easy it is to access?

I'm a bit more dubious about this than you. Especially when you consider how incredulous Rivian is about 1- aftermarket/non Rivian-owned-SC repairs, 2- side steps and sliders, 3- aftermarket wheels/tires,
My R1T went into service this last time with aftermarket wheels/tires (of which are a larger diameter than my stock tires) and sliders, and they didn't say shit, or have any issue with them. They even took it on a drive to verify the problem was fixed.

They really only care if it affects their ability to perform their job, like if they have to drop the battery out, or the particular sliders you have block the OEM lifting points. The second part is probably as much about "you damaged my equipment!!!1" vs the potential safety issues of lifting from a point of unknown strength.

Since you've provided absolutely zero detail about how you've implemented this, no-one can argue the M-M A point against you.

Nor can anyone abscond with intellectual property.

Some methods of hardware hacking carry huge risks of destroying the attached devices, especially if they require some subset of skills the end-users don't have.

One method of achieving "carplay" here would be to interrupt/hijack the signal being sent to the display, and replace it with your own with a device designed for it. As far as I can tell from my Rivian, this approach would require quite a bit of disassembly before you could even get to the connectors involved. Maybe I'm wrong though, since I've never tried to pull my displays off.

I’ve been waiting for Rivian to add a browser like Tesla has, since there are several aftermarket boxes for Teslas that utilize the browser. I believe they connect wirelessly so less risk to warranty etc. it’s also a browser app you can easily switch to so quite seamless (I sold my Tesla before I could try one firsthand, though).

I’m not holding my breath on rivian adding a browser, though. Even if they do there’s a Good chance it will only work in park 🤦‍♂️

I’m actually really happy with my Carpodgo 3rd screen as I like to nerd out with the data from Rivian while running CP on the 3rd screen. But it’d still be cool to have CP on the big screen plus all the other android features and apps. Excited to try this out if the price is reasonable!

While that is somewhat of a fair point, providing specific integration details would equally not allow anyone to argue M-M A, unless of course the screen or a directly-related system eventually broke and it was determined EV Play was at fault. The assumption in that post, like most of these "this will void the warranty" posts, is that Rivian will void the entire vehicle warranty based on this or any other aftermarket device, simply because it is aftermarket. That is simply not true, as stated by M-M A.

For clarification, will this work while in motion?

And if so, will the entire functionality (video and gaming) be available while in motion or only certain features (navigation, music, etc.)?

With respect to infotainment: I respect the effort to implement your own, but if I use this product it would be 100% for CarPlay. I wouldn't use any of the infotainment features.

SO, I'm not asking you to give away your secrets, but we're all trying to understand how this works and what type of risks are involved (if any).

Is this some type of physical hijack (/intermediary--similar to the early 90s when we needed that little RCA to Coax adapter that allowed us to play Nintendo on Channel 3?)? Or is it a software hack?
My guess, it's probably like the Chinese made ACP/AA multimedia interface boxes available for older BMWs. You get access to the Rivian's harness, to and from the display, plug those into the aftermarket box. That wireless switcher he mentioned, switches the box between the two environments... Rivian or the box itself. When it's in Rivian UI mode, the box is simply a pass-through.

In BMWs, such boxes uses a long press of the iDrive menu button to switch between iDrive and ACP/AA. Since there are no physical buttons in the Rivian, the wireless button is necessary.

This is how it's installed in a X5:

That'd be almost a must if the voice control button can be mapped to activate Siri like it does on cars with native CarPlay.
