Anyone know off hand where on the tailgate the backup camera is? I am ordering a new tailgate pad and want to see if I can avoid obstructing it if at all possible.

I believe it’s below the tailgate. I use the raceface pad and it doesn’t block the camera itself. Depending on how you position your bike, a bike tire might show up in the camera view. I found this to be manageable and it should be even better with the new rear accessory setting.

EDIT: I do believe the camera locations are in the online users guide too so you can check me on this.

It’s directly above the license plate. Not on the tailgate.

Are you able to close the tonneau with the pad still on? (this seems unlikely, but cool if so)

It’s right above the license plate. The camera placement was obviously picked by someone who has never owned a truck in their life and never backed up to a trailer. The image quality is great but it is next to useless for hooking up a trailer due to staring at the ball dead on instead of looking down on it from above.

That’s got to be immensely frustrating.

I wonder what the design trade off was. Generally, that sort of decision is based on something else being problematic - e.g. “can’t stick the camera on the <place> because that’ll block the <other thing>.” But I don’t see any issue having the camera anywhere on the tailgate, except aesthetics. Which would be dumb due to the towing capacity of this thing. Weird.

It’s bad. On any other truck I can back up and be lined up and done in one shot. With the R1T I’m getting in and out to check 5-6 times because you simply can’t tell what the position of the ball relative to the trailer tongue is with any kind of accuracy.

Would like to give you a good answer but my tonneau gave up the ghost before I installed the pad. Anyone else?
