What's with all the weird AI-generated videos about Rivians? The vehicles shown are entirely AI-generated. There are channels that have just a few subscribers but crank out hundreds of fake AI-generated videos. Is there a purpose to this?

Is there a point to anything AI is used for at this stage???‍♂ A large data center uses as much electricity and water as a small city so we can create stupid pictures and avoid writing our own emails.

I think it's pretty obvious they're just trying to get views for monetary gain. This is par for the course now.
Could be, but given how Youtube monetizes videos, and these things are only getting a few views, I'm not sure how anyone's making money off of them.

they cost the channel $0 to make, any revenue at all is profit. If a single video goes viral, they win. It's not hard to see the angle here (and also how awful content creation is already becoming as a result).

Ahoy Codogman. You hit it bud. I do not know the exact figures but AI and bitcoin mining consume a s—t load of energy. To produce what?
I was in the PV/energy industry for twenty plus years and when I would suggest to a perspective customer that they have an energy audit done prior to making any further energy decisions,, the response could be something to the effect that I had insulated them and was their god-given right to consume as much energy as they damn well pleased. Ok, fine.
But do not fear, Elmo the Great Genius, once stated that all of the bitcoin mining was fine as we would use renewable energy to power it. wTF? This makes it ok? So this is a better use of RE than powering a vehicle? How can anyone consider this individual to be intelligent?

In general, as you can see, videos created by AI are of high quality. In everyday life, I constantly use this tool, namely the utility from overchat . This is a chat with an unlimited number of requests, which will help you find even the most difficult information.
Your frustration is completely understandable. The energy consumption of AI and bitcoin mining is indeed staggering, and it raises valid concerns about the priorities in our energy usage. The notion that renewable energy justifies high consumption for these purposes is debatable. Renewable energy should ideally be directed towards essential and sustainable applications, such as powering homes, industries, and vehicles, to truly make a positive environmental impact.
The perspective you've encountered in your years in the PV/energy industry highlights a broader issue—many people still struggle to see energy conservation as a responsibility, not just a personal choice. The dismissive attitude towards energy audits or efficiency improvements reflects a lack of understanding about the collective benefits of reducing consumption.
As for the idea that renewable energy can "excuse" the massive energy demands of bitcoin mining or AI, it's a complex issue. While renewable energy is a better alternative to fossil fuels, it's not unlimited or without environmental impact. Prioritizing its use for essential services and sustainable development is crucial. The push for using renewables in less critical areas like bitcoin mining could indeed be seen as a misalignment of priorities.
It's important to continue raising awareness about these issues and advocating for more responsible and thoughtful energy usage. Conversations like this one are a step in the right direction.

If this was a serious question and not just lamenting about how there's so much AI-generated garbage these days, there are a few things AI is helpful for. Medical AI has been shown to have the potential to make more consistent and accurate diagnoses than human doctors. AI is useful for examining large data sets and performing a multi-variate analysis to find patterns. This is good for all things scientific. One of those things is directly relevant to this forum, EV battery research. AI has been shown to help suggest new combinations of battery chemistries.
