Generally not sure if these are related to one another, but noticed the boot because of the break issue.
The Quick: Woke up this morning, hopped in the truck and noticed my break went straight to the floor. Once at its bottom out position it triggered ABS and the thing went nuts. Didnt think much of it till I started going out of the neighborhood and noticed I had almost no break feel through the pedal. Hard to notice because I have regen on high so I dropped it to low and disabled break assist in the settings. Went to stop and nothing. Went right back to the house hopped out and noticed a trail up the driveway and then a puddle under the passenger front tire. Look under and it is just coated in grease from the axle. Needless to say the truck is being towed to the nearest SC. Stay tuned for the exciting episode of why cant my 7000LB truck stop.
The Details: I wanted to separate the detailed sections for those who dont care much about the nuance about why this may have happened. Ive had the truck for a bit over a year now and have worked real hard at putting 47,000 miles on it. I'm in the Colorado area and do a ton of commuting and mountain driving. Coming back from the resort yesterday I started to noticed my break acting weird but still had plenty of stopping power. So I wasnt concerned about it. I did notice that ABS kept triggering and thought it just needed a reset. Parked it in the garage and started charging to go back up the mountains the next day. Got in this morning and the break felt like it wasnt attached to anything. Pulled out the drive way and because of the one foot driving thought everything was ok. Pulled out of my neighborhood and when I went to stop from around 50MPH just nothing. Just bouncing around due to abs. So I crawled it to a park-n-ride lot and drove in a circle trying to see if I actually had breaks. I did but barely. I did a full vehicle reset and now the break light sticks on. Regen saved my butt here as it made it much less sketchy to get back to the house. Although I almost backed into my garage wall. There are no warning lights, although the red Break light is still stuck on. After calling customer service for a tow I noticed the trail of oil up and down the drive. Then noticed it under my front tire.
Now this is where I am not sure what is what. The axle boot is obviously split and grease is everywhere. But the oil on the ground is much lighter. I am not sure if there is a break oil leak somewhere and the axle boot is secondary or if they have caused one another. Only time will tell. On the not bright side all rental places are closed so Ill have to handle all of this in the morning.
What are yalls thoughts?
Hello and welcome to JustAnswer, an independent technical support website. My name is Tyler. It is my pleasure to help you today. Please know that Just Answers is a pay to use question and answer website not affiliated with any other company. If you wish to continue please let me know as I am happy to help.
During our interaction today I will be required to ask additional questions. This allows me to both narrow down the trouble you are having and provide me the clearest possible view of your issue.
At some point during our interaction you will be asked to fill out a quick review. This really means a lot to me, even if I only helped a little. If you would not mind filling this out as honestly as you can that would be great. Please know my service and the Just answer platform are separate. Meaning the review is not for the platform but myself as a expert and independent helper.
Please also know that in some situations I may be forced to refer you to a different customer service, specified repair center, or to other companies. This is only done when it is clear assistance cannot be provided remotely or if experts won't have access to the required systems. Thank you for your understanding. Know that regardless I strive to provide the best and quickest solutions possible.
Update: The SC has dug into the truck and confirmed what we have all talked about here. The bracket obviously was hanging from its normal position after the retaining bolt backed itself out. The are repairing this all under warranty thankfully. From the call they will replacing axel out right as well as the brake line and wheel speed sensor. They will also inspect all other components on that side and replace as needed.
So, If you have not check these bolts. As mentioned by some of the community below this is likely a good item to add to a regular checklist. Additionally, not all braking force is lost. Because of the split reservoir used by the system 1 front break and a rear should still be working. Holding down the parking button should also engage the brakes as well. Also regen can help. Ill keep everyone posted of full parts and repair brake down soon. Waiting on parts but should have the truck within a weeks time, hopefully.
