I'm closing in on a decision to swap out my 21" wheels and tires (now that the stock Pirellis are worn) for 20" AT tires. The Bridgestone Dueler Ascent A/Ts (SL) don't seem to receive much attention but seem to be a generally well received tire (with other vehicles). Does anyone have any use cases for these on a Rivian that you can share? Mostly interested in how they compared to whatever stock tire you replaced them with (assuming 20" or 22" factory wheels will be most common with this particular tire). Trying to get an idea of how much a hit to range I will take (I have a DM Large pack R1T - 350 miles of total published range). Thanks!

I say go for it, check Tire Rack reviews, several there by RIV owners, in a nutshell:

The Bridgestone Dueler A/T is viewed as:
  • One of the best A/T tires for comfort and snow
  • Noticeably quieter than OEM
  • Excellent off-road
  • Efficiency tradeoff ranges from moderate to severe depending on setup
Another review claimed the snow/ice performance was almost as good as dedicated winter tire…

I got a set in Nov. 22” paid $1300 out the door. I had nitto grapplers before and the bridgestones are quieter and better on range. The Nitto looked better, they were more aggressive and a bit bigger. They also were at least a $1k more. I am happy with the bridgestones and would buy them again.

I have the Ascents in LT 275/65-20 on my ‘23 R1T QM. I have about 1800 miles on them. So far, they have been great! They are very quiet (so far), handle well, and any range hit has been negligible 🙂, compared to the OEM SL Pirellis. Having said that, coming off 21’s, there will surely be a bit more noticable range hit, whether or not you go with an LT. I went with the LT‘s as putting SL tires on a 7000+lbs. vehicle didn’t make much sense to me. I also wanted the extra durability for off roading. The Ascent LT is fairly light for an LT tire - one reason I went with it. Can’t offer any incite into their snow capability, as I have dedicated wheels/snow tires for winter in the mountains. Shoulda left the darn Ascents on this winter, as snow has been pretty MIA in the Sierras.

This I find odd. None of Rivian’s factory tires are LT. Any tire that can support weight of a R1 will work, regardless of whether it’s SL, XL or LT. If Rivian, in all of their development testing determined LTs are necessary, they would have spec’ed nothing but LTs as standard equipment.

With LT you’re just trading range/efficiency for greater durability of tires, which is a valid trade off for those who tackle rough trails often. If not, and recommended by tire salesman, I’d be inclined to think you got talked into spending more… for sake of his commission.

I've got a couple thousand miles on these tires on an R1S, replacing the OEM 20" Pirelli's. I've been very happy with them so far. I'd characterize them this way:
  • They are much, much quieter than the Pirelli's
  • Snow and ice performance was great in the limited winter we had in the Pacific NW
  • I had a minor concern about possible hydroplaning once when I hit some standing water going 70 mph. This was a one off occurrence and wet weather performance in rainy Seattle has been great otherwise.
  • I can't really compare the efficiency yet, as my usage has been in the winter with the associated cold weather effects.
I'd recommend them.

Appreciate the feedback from both of you. I'm about to replace the OEM 20" Pirelli's on my R1S Quad and have been leaning towards this tire so think I'm going to pull the trigger and give it a go. I get really good efficiency on the Pirelli's for some reason (lifetime average is 2.32 miles per kWh on 38,000 miles total) so curious to see if the new shoes impact that much or if it's just a combo of my weather / driving style.

My biggest concern is that these are 3 peak & I have zero need for winter / ice performance in my location, so hoping those features don't negatively impact the lifespan of the tire tread (as I believe those features typically indicate a softer compound).

OP - one note if you decide to go with these - Costco has an $80 instant rebate on a set of 4 running right now + free install. Discount Tire will usually match Costco's installed price, so worth a look if you want to go that route (while I love Costco, I do not love their tire service / scheduling / wait times nor do I trust them to work on my R1 as much as the local guys I've gotten to know at DT).

I just ordered these from Costo. The price before tax, $1411 which includes free install and $80 promotion. I very much look forward to a quiet ride coming from these Pirellis.

No more than the negatives of running ATs on pavement. These aren’t studded tires. They are just tires designed to meet a certain performance criteria specified by the 3PMSF standard. The rating is not independently tested and certified. It’s self-tested and self-certified by tire manufacturers. So it’s honor system and somewhat subjective as far as consumers are concerned. The factory Pirelli ATs are 3PMSF. Biggest factor affecting efficiency is rolling resistance. It’s not a data point manufacturers provide, so how this compares to the Pirelli is unknown. There is another thread on this tire. But no long term user data has been shared. Only initial impressions.

Had mine fitted today, will share thoughts in this thread as time passes.

Oh, and in case relevant to anyone - you can fit only 3x 22" Bridgestone Duelers in the rear of the R1S (2nd row up), but all 4x 22" Pirelli Scorpions!

I am getting ready to replace my tires soon, so I hope this deal lasts but either way, it sounds like the ascent fits the usage needs and price range for what I'm looking for. I am only at 16k miles and my rears at right at the wear bar. Fronts have a bit more left (I rotated at 8000 miles).

What type of mileage did you all get from your OEM's? I thought for sure I'd at least get 24k miles off of them. Probably too many hard accelerations....haha

I replaced my 31500 mile 20" Pirelli Scorpions (PS) with these Dueler Acents (DA) and I am amazed how joyful it is to drive my truck again! The PS were so freaking loud compared to these near silent DAs. Given the miles on the PS, the ride was less compliant and now so smooth with the new DAs. I don't notice any adverse handling characteristics with the DAs that are 4 lbs lighter (44 vs 48 lbs). I also appreciate their load ratings between the two tires are the same.

I've only driven 50 miles around town so far and efficiency seems about the same, 2.2 miles/kwh. While the tires are absolutely silent up to 48 mph, there may be a slight hum >48 mph. I have yet to hit the freeway.

Finally, Costco installation (Danville, CA) was seemless. They were aware of the procedure, had the pucks, and updated the tire replacement settings.

Thanks for the input. Helps make my decision. I wonder how much these will last compared to the PS. My truck is a lease so I want to make sure I don't have to replace them again before returning at around ~30k miles. My rears are basically down to the wear bar now at 13k miles. I can probably squeeze out another 1k miles. I really hope these DA's last much longer than that so when I return it, I still have enough tread within the required limit.

Curious to see how they are after 2k miles. That data point is what's missing from other threads on this tire.
