I’ve been with Liberty Mutual for over 20 years but for 2025, they’ve transferred all renewals to Safeco. I got my auto policy renewal and it increased 75% since May ($2.6K to $4.5K). Multi-car and home policy discounts included. I knew rates were increasing overall but this was nuts, or so I thought.

I spent the day comparing rates with jaw-dropping quotes and that’s if they even write a new policy. AAA $11,000/yr!!!, Allstate $8.6K/yr, Farmers $7K/yr. Is this really the new normal? Anyone else also hit with crazy spikes?

Coverages: 100/300/100, $500/$1k ded. Zero extras, R1T rated with 7.5K miles/yr. 2nd car at 1K miles/yr. SF garaged.
Me: 40s, male, single, xlt credit, no accidents, no points. Zero claims in 20 years.

Insurance is definitely up in CA. Auto is up a bit. Home too. Umbrella is up a ton.

But that seems insane. Did you try State Farm? $12k a year for one day is like a joke. They are off by a decimal.

I’m in CO and saw a similar jump after a year of ownership with USAA. I looked at cutting back some of the ”extras” I had on my policy but it was still like a 60% increase. All the quotes I got were also high. Ended up switching to Progressive but even after cutting back on coverage where I could it was still 30% higher.

Like you I am single, 49, excellent credit and no accidents or tickets. I’ve met a bunch of people whose insurance went up, across all makes, models, ICE, EV, etc. Unfortunately I think this is how it will be going forward. Insurance companies are for profit and will cover their losses somehow. I’m sure Progressive will spike after 6-12 months too. It’s ridiculous.

Regarding California, I had the same happen with Wawanesa who has generally had the lowest rates in CA but went up to $250+ /month. Went with Lemonade where I had a Renter's insurance policy and it is $78 + 0.15/mile. Based on the miles I drive will come out way lower. You do need to install a tracker though, so FYI

I’m with Wawanesa in CA and three of my cars went down and one, the oldest car, went up slightly. So basically no increase. My HO policy renews in April but it’s been pretty stable too. Friend uses Costco and has low rates so I checked and they are much higher for me. My umbrella policy went up and I cancelled it.

Where I live, my auto renewal this month went up $500 to $2,500 every 6 months for my two Teslas and my R1S and an ICE SUV on death row. Every insurance co. jacked up rates way up. State Farm would have been $700 more. Reason given: increasing repair costs. Have you noticed how EVs are mostly totaled by insurance companies in accidents?

I saw no reason to keep driving my three EVs, especially in the winter; kept one Tesla and ICE active, took liability off my other Tesla and R1S, kept comprehensive only, and sent both to mothball storage in my garage till at least next May. That slashed my ins. premium in half. I plan on rotating my vehicles this way going forward such that only two are driven each policy renewal.

My increase is a pittance when compared to others'. Wow.

We too were with Liberty Mutual for 8 years. Last year when we bought our 2023 Tesla Model S the insurance was more than our other 3 vehicles combined. In June we purchased our new 2023 Rivian R1T (Dual performance with max battery so about the same HP). We kept with Liberty Mutual for 4 months until our policy would expire. We are married and retired and drive around 40K plus miles a year, with accident free, ticket free driving records. We are now down to 3 cars.

In October this year went over Amica which is considerable better rated than Liberty Mutual. Our coverage limits our somewhat higher than yours. For us, Amica is at $2014/yr for the Tesla, and $1312 for the 2023 Rivian. Liberty Mutual was over $3200/yr for the Tesla and $2400/yr for the Rivian.
When purchased the Tesla and the Rivianm cost us within 10% of other. We were surprised that the Rivian's insurance was so much less.

Glad to be done with all Liberty Mutual insurance.

Amica is one of the highest-rated insurance companies, second to none in my view. Much cheaper rates, oustanding customer service in every way. SF, LM, all the others will never beat it, can't touch it.

Not just California, insurers are bailing from Delaware too. The insurance industry is with you when it's easy to make money, but they run away at the first challenge. I have State Farm homeowners on a coastal property, no claims, no devastating storms, no issues. I'm flipping that property, State Farm refuses to write a new policy for me on a new coastal property in Delaware due to the California and Florida struggles. Nationwide, Amica and All State have all refused to offer coverage as well. Lloyd's of London had no problem writing a policy. Pretty sad that a foreign business will make the money and not a US company.

FU Jake from State Farm! "Like a bad neighbor, State Farm don't care"

What is your 2nd car that you only drive 1k miles/yr? Some kind of supercar?

Typical insurance for cars in #300K~$400k is about $7k/yr these days and add Rivian on the top of that...
