Rivian R1T R1S Canadian Price Increased 1740598628049-ch

Rivian just bumped up pricing in Canada stating a currency exchange adjustment. They are using an exchange rate > $1.50 which is very high and after tax puts the Tri models north of $200k after taxes. Ouch.

I was looking daily for a Tri in the shop, hoping to take advantage of the CAD $8600 discount. The way the Tri models are prices (right around CAD $150k), this makes a much bigger impact as the taxes in BC are such that PST jumps from 15% to 20% at $150K. With the discount applied, I would save the $8600 from Rivian and a further ~$7500 in tax, a total of $16k. Unfortunately, no models hit the shop and the prices are just far too high now. I can't justify this, so I'll just sit on my cash and wait for better pricing in the future. Might also just look for a well-priced Gen1 Quad.

Pricing before and after the currency hike. This will jump even higher if Canada retaliates Trump tariffs on US-made vehicles. Going to be a rough year for Rivian in Canada.

Rivian did warn this was coming. Which seems highly unusual.

I do wonder why they upped the price so much... is their CFO really forecasting our CDN $ to be that weak?!

I had started to make almost the exact same post as OP yesterday but then didn't bother as I figured it affected so few members here. I had done screen shots for what was available in Ontario.

The only Tri I saw was a white R1T IIRC, in Vancouver. It's as if they removed all other Tri's when they announced there would be a price increase. That R1T is still on Rivian Roamer but now there's also R1T Tri and 2 R1S Tri's. How that's possible, I'm not sure but that in itself doesn't sit well with me.

Ya, the R1S Tri is CA $173,900 less $8600 Q1 discount + taxes = $186,789. That's insane.

When the discount ends, it will be $196,507. Good luck with that.

If there was a TRI R1T available in my area on Monday, I might have just made an 11'th hour stab at one but no way now. I've told my wife to consider a Kia EV5 instead of waiting for an R2 and maybe I'll wait for a Scout instead of getting an R1T. I was hoping to have an R1T (ideally with bi-directional) and an R2 but I don't see that happening now.

Tesla also increased their pricing in Canada so I don't blame Rivian for an increase but this seems more like a gouge.

Also, all the stock that was available up till Monday that I was seeing at least, was showing V1 Powered Tonneau Covers! (including dual motor stock). Now there's a TRI with a V2 cover. Coincidental? I think not.

yep it's listed under the "additional features" tab on the left hand side
looks like they make it available for all new builds?

Listings on Rivian Roamer are not inventory. A listing on Rivian Roamer (and Rivian.com) is just saying that given configuration is available for purchase. There may be 0 vehicles behind it, there may be 1,000.

THE PRICING Is right in line and fair. Our exchange rate as of today is a 1.435. They're adding in 6.5 basis points, or about 4.5% "buffer". They just can't change list prices over and over again so they set a price for the year to cover their @sses and if the exchange rate goes the other way in our favor then they can always offer discount promos.
Also remember that 4.5% difference is peanuts. It costs a whole lot more money to do business in Canada vs the US. A service center in Canada vs a US location costs way, way more for wages, electricity, water, rent, insurance ect...ect... and also divided by a lower volume of vehicles to boot.
Fortunately I snuck in just on time and was waiting for around a month for a blue colored R1S with max battery to come into the inventory queue. Got the old $10k cheaper pricing and the $4300 promo on the max pack. It landed from the factory on Mon and I literally pick it up tomorrow morning :)

It is not far off, CD did hit 1.47 in the last 3 months, they probably have to pick a price that they will not need to change frequently.

I would check to see if they can discount to current exchange rate.

Am I the only one who thinks a 5%-8% markup is quite fair in exchange for:
  • transporting a vehicle internationally
  • dealing with another set of regulatory requirements
  • buffer for fluctuating exchange rates and the hassle of getting the currency exchanged
  • higher costs of warranty work
I would not be surprised if even at that price the Canadian exports are less profitable.

Doesn't Rivian also take the hit on the exchange rate as well?

EDIT: lol disregard I see that is your #3

Sorry to derail this thread but is there any way Canada can make Montana part of British Columbia? Or maybe it's own province given its size. I promise most of the undesirables will move to Wyoming. :CWL:

Agree with this 100% There was a blue R1T Tri added to the shop, black interior and black wheels. I would have pulled the trigger on that one with the $8600 discount but not at the new price with the additional 5% tax on top. Really can't justify spending that much more for for a pickup 24 hours later. I'm not in a rush, will just drive my gas guzzling V8 F-150 until I can find a reasonable deal.
