Canadian Price Increased

The point holds... one is not able to fit a quiver of skis, theirs and their buddies' for a day of ski touring, etc... one can fit skis inside a Honda Fit, but that is not the point. Many have decided the truck is worth the high price tag even while mounting skis on a ski rack atop the bed or roof, but in my opinion this is silly. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of things to like about the R1T... but the premiums being asked for an 'adventure design' with clear limitations has kept me on the sidelines thus far

In fairness to Rivian, it's not a full size truck. The bed is no smaller than my old 4-door Tacoma had.

Honestly, it's not so much the MSRP that bothers me ... it's our stupid tax. The so-called "luxury tax" is such a deterrent to buying a more upscale trim.

In BC, the PST goes from 10 to 15% on vehicles over $125K, and from 15 to 20% on vehicles over $150K.
AND you pay GST on the combined total of the MSRP (minus whatever trade-in) + PST on vehicles over $125K, instead of the just the MSRP.

For that reason alone, I went with a Dual standard that was just shy of the $125K mark ... there was a Dual RIS that I liked for $8K more, but the difference in tax was another $10K.

I have zero interest in giving our politicians any more of my hard earned money so that they can misappropriate it.

Ya, the taxes are brutal once you get to the higher trims. I was going to buy a Tri Max as with the $8600 discount it was in the 15% PST range. With the price hike not only do I have to spend more on the MSRP but I would pay an additional 5% tax on the vehicle. It was already a stretch, but now just silly to spend nearly $200k on a truck.

Given your current vehicles, I don't see the issue, if you can make those work to suit your skis then what's the difference?

For reference, the diagonal bed length is 1890mm, if you ope the tonneau slightly then the tips of the skis can rest on the top of the tailgate but remain 90% under the tonneau.

What's your "adventure vehicle" criteria?

Yes, I would have done the same. Though in Ontario, there is no luxury tax on the R1's as they exceed the GVWR threshold and are considered a heavy duty vehicle. It's what has me looking at heavier vehicles in the first place. Though I have owned trucks before.

So here it's just the usual PST/GST of 13% in total.

20% PST! That's insane. I don't know the ins/outs of how things work in BC but the luxury tax is a Federal tax, right?

The luxury tax is equal to the lesser of 10% of the taxable amount of the subject vehicle and 20% of the amount above the price threshold.

If BC is mixing the Federal Luxury Tax into the PST, I'd say there must be a problem as the Rivian R1's are exempt from the luxury tax.

Luxury tax is a provincial tax (it's a tiered add on to our PST).

That's what concerns me. It's actually a Federal Tax that your province has melded into the PST but as a federal tax, the Rivian R1's are excluded.

PST is tiered, essentially the luxury tax is built-in. 20% when you hit $150k

Install a toilet in it and you'd be exempt .

I'd be asking my MP about it. Doesn't seem fair that the province can change the rules of the federal luxury tax simply by virtue of including it the PST.

Thanks for the details. Yes I can do my truck stuff with my truck (firewood, haul construction materials to and from, deal with a snowy road to house in winter, and do the occasional adventure trip when my car won't suffice, carry mountain bikes) and the rest with my car (day to day stuff, but also much of my recreation given I have a big ski box), but I hate burning fossil fuels, and a single vehicle that can do it all - like a Tacoma-sized pick up that is electric and has secure storage (frunk, tonneau cover) and can fit bikes, skis, surfboards, camping gear, other people, all at the same time... the Rivian would be that truck if the bed was a bit longer, and yes the above is realistic at the same time... currently planning a March break road trip with my boy with all that gear.

Fair enough, but I would say living with the vehicle you'd be surprised how much you can hide within the vehicle without impacting occupants. Tailgate pad, for mountain bikes, surfboard between, camping gear spread between the gear tunnel and frunk. Bam your camping with friends.

Same boat for me. Tesla's since 2018 but not my next one. I was recently texted by Tesla about upgrading to a new Model 3 with 0.99% financing.

Response: Not in a million years.

Not that it will be read but I felt better. I'm only 17 months in with my current M3 so I can wait this out and pounce if something seems like a good fit at a reasonable price. We are looking at 2 vehicles. An R2 and an R1T would be ideal but not buying anything that's not a good value, comparatively.

We are looking at 2 vehicles. An R2 and an R1T would be ideal but not buying anything that's not a good value, comparatively.

I really think the R2 is going to be a homerun. It'll be more affordable, but still carry the same ethos.
