So, I reserved my R1S in September to replace my 13 year old Acura however, after replacing my transmission 3 years ago, it seems that there are new problems coming up with that again.
I am not going to sink more money in this car. Can someone tell me what options are available in the short-term (or in general, good alternatives to the R1S)?

Bad timing with the shape of the used market. Depending on where you are you might be able to grab an ID.4, MME, or Hyundai EV off the lot and cash in on the tax credit for this year and then either sell or use to trade when your R1S is ready. That would allow you to double dip on the credit with the Rivian and might offset any loss in value.

The list is short for real alternatives if you want something else you should list out your requirements you need and see what fits it…

Here is the list of direct competitors to the R1S LE

1) R1S Adventure
2) R1S Explorer.

I just sank 7200 into transmission work because the used market is stupid right now, and to get new, you either have to wait month(s) or pay through the nose.

I second the EV6/Ionic route suggestion in the meantime while we all wait....

Find an EV that still has the tax credit and that you actually like. EV6/Ionic/ID.4, etc. After nearly a year I'm still in the black on trade-in value to Vroom with my ID.4 (neglecting sales tax and registration fees).

You *could* so do a short term lease/subscription with Volvo or something, but there's zero chance of getting that money back. It didn't make sense to me financially when I looked at it.

If you just placed your R1S reservation in September I feel like you probably have 2 years left to wait before you get it delivered. I would grab an Ioniq 5 or EV6 and enjoy it until your Rivian is ready. You should still get plenty of value for it when it's time to get rid of it.

I just found a Polestar 2 available for immediate delivery near me (in Princeton). While I would think a better alternative (size wise) would be the Polestar 3 (which I think was going to be their larger SUV than the Polestar2) I could still go for the P2 if I have to.

Do you guys have any opinion about the Polestar 2 ?

I obsessed over the Rivian R1S for over a year and know everything about it - so being forced into this position is not something I am looking forward to....

My R1S delivery window is 1H2023 - but I doubt they will make it.

I am looking at a Polestar 2 - the features seem good, however, range, size and warranty seem really bad !!

I think the Polestar 2 is an under rated and under appreciated vehicle. If you can make do with the size, I don't think its a bad option at all.

Maybe I'm a bit out of touch, but what's wrong with the warranty? 4 years/50k miles seems pretty standard for the full warranty and the battery is covered for 8 years or 100k miles.

Maybe I am misinterpreting, but I am seeing 3 years:
Included Services

  • 3 years vehicle servicing

  • 3 years connected services

  • 3 years roadside assistance

  • 3 years of vehicle warranty

This is a new (though pre-configured) 2022 Polestar 2 (from Inventory).
