it's about wind resistance while towing and a box trailer is, well, boxy.
General consensus is to expect a 40-60% drop in range while towing. The Rivian trailer weight feature is nice, but note that it measures the weight within the first mile-ish of distance. For example, one time while towing a loaded U-Haul Car trailer, my Rivian said the trailer weight was 1,000lbs as it measured this weight while going down our driveway (it drops 130' in 1/4 mile). After my first charge stop, I disconnected the trailer lights and reconnected them, and the truck recalculated (on flat roads) that the trailer weighed about 5,000lbs.
