Perhaps I'm misinterpreting but this seems confusing. Here's the option in the configurator to update your options:

Rivian R1T R1S Changing configuration will or won't impact delivery date? 1617924680620

But when you click on "Update Configuration" you are presented with this message:

Rivian R1T R1S Changing configuration will or won't impact delivery date? 1617924735921

So you can change things without "affecting your priority for delivery" but it "may affect your delivery timing"? Wut? I'm confused.

Also, I seem to recall that they would even let you switch from a truck to an SUV without penalty. Is that still true? I'd actually like to see both in person before I make the final call, although I've booked the truck... Thanks.

If you switch from the R1T to the R1S, your delivery will be later (without affecting your priority delivery) since the R1S is released later.

If you switch away from the LE (on either model), delivery will be later still.

Changing color, wheels, etc won't make a difference

Yes and no.

For example, if you have a LE reservation and switch the color or wheels, you should keep your place in line. However, if you switched to the 400 mile battery, then you’d lose LE and delivery would definitely be affected.

Even within LE, an early reservation for R1T may get you June/July and switching to R1S — even at the front of the line — would push you back to at least August.

So it really depends... My understanding is that you’ll still maintain your relative position for whatever config you end up on.

Keep in mind position is only part of the equation. They have stated location is part of the delivery matrix. There could be other things as well that have not been discussed but color and interior could make a difference depending on how they have those scoped out for build and availability.

Hopefully this could be some of the information the guides will be able to provide.

It is important to point out that the first statement from Rivian is regarding a change in your priority for delivery (ie, your relative place in line for delivery of any given configuration) which is strictly a function of when you paid your $1000 and is only one of several factors which determine your delivery date. The second statement from Rivian is regarding delivery timing which is influenced by your priority but also influenced by where you take delivery as well as your configuration since not all configurations will be available initially (R1T LE production begins June 2021, R1S production begins August 2021, non-LE configurations begin Janurary 2022, etc).

This is helpful. I think their messaging could be much clearer. As currently stated, I'm too nervous to touch anything for fear of getting sent to the back of the line...

And there is no reason to. You can play with the configurator to your heart's content without risking anything by simply doing it without logging in to your account. Wait until your Rivian Guide contacts you to finalize your configuration.

I don't think there's any traps here. If options don't say they'll change delivery date, they won't. R1T vs R1S (August at the earliest) and LE or not-LE (January 2021) are the only things that should currently make a difference.

I like the certainty that many have about their information.

I’m 100% certain the only thing I know for sure is I don’t know anything for sure....

A lot of people were freaking out about being required to order Launch Edition green to get Launch Edition at one point when it was crystal clear it was an OPTION unique to LE. This is a reasonable company that communicates reasonably. All this warning says is that pricing/timing could change if you tweak your options and save the update. It's not hard to understand which ones those are, but there are always people who gloss over details and warning windows, etc. Or conversely sweat the details a little bit too much and worry they missed something.

I’ve always read this like your spot in line doesn’t change, but you might change the line you are waiting in. You’ll never put yourself at the back of the line, but if you change your pack size to one that won’t be produced until later in the year, your date will change, and so on.

I would think that if you changed back it would put you back in line where you were. I don’t think the first ones to configure a few months ago will be the first ones delivered.

Just keep in mind that if you switch away from the LE (to configure the Max Pack i.e.), that is the one change that you cannot undo. You can change from the T to the S, white to blue, 22" to 20" wheels as many times as you want and you will retain your priority delivery and place in line within the LE group.

Proximity to a service center is a key consideration in determining delivery date so, yes, it could impact. How it would impact would depend on old/new locations.
