Charger for R1S

So, couple of years ago before the Rivian, I had charing outlets installed in my garage. 2 6-50R outlets, since Tesla had adapters for the 6-50. Hoped Rivian would follow suit when I get the vehicle. But, I guess that won't be the case.

I usually charge the Rivian with the Tesla cable, using a Lectron J1772 adapter. I'd like to get a 6-50R charging cable for the Rivian. Can anyone provide any pros and cons and suggest good ones? Or should I just another Tesla charging cable and continue using the adapter?

This is to not rewire, and I checked online, but figured I''ll ask here if anyone has used any or has info.

NEMA 14-50 seems to be the standard that everyone is gravitating towards. I've owned Tesla, Ford, and Rivian EVs and all of the OEM mobile connectors come with 5-15 and 14-50 plugs.

Do you have a neutral wire available behind the plugs you have installed? Shouldn't be too hard to just swap the outlet, if so.

That said I'm a huge proponent for just hard wiring home charging. Much safer and allows for higher amperages

I suggest hardwiring a Tesla Universal charger. Then you can charge both of your vehicles without either needing an adapter.

I've always felt like we have this backwards... The 14-50 is more popular, but the 6-50 is better suited for EV charging.

You're not necessarily wrong about that, but I appreciate that 14-50 is the standard, because this is what you'll find at 50 amp RV camping spots. So they're far more common out in the wild.

Clipper Creek (now Enphase) has pretty good charger with 6/50R plug

oh i need to check on this. not very electrical savvy.

"Rewiring" is an exaggeration.

Replacing the 6-50 outlet with a hardwired charger would take 5 minutes and require no new parts aside from the new charger. And since you are suggesting that you are going to buy a new charger anyway there is no increased expense to go this route.

The only tool you need is a screwdriver. All you have to do is unscrew the the 6-50 outlet from the wall. Disconnect the wires from it(also with the screwdriver), and attach the wires directly to the charger(again with that same screwdriver).

Correct, you already have all the wires you need to hook up a Tesla Universal Wall Charger.

This is not always true.

A 6-50 outlet does not use a neutral wire, just 2 hots and a ground. So frequently electricians will not run a neutral wire when installing a 6-50 outlet. There is nothing improper about not running a neutral wire when installing an outlet that has no way to attach a neutral wire.

14-50 does require a neutral wire. So if they don't have a neutral wire, they cannot (easily) replace the 6-50 with a 14-50 outlet.

But most hardwired EV chargers, such as the Tesla Universal Charger, do not use a neutral wire. So the OP definitely has the wires needed to attach a hardwired charger. They may or may not have the wires required to install a 14-50 outlet.

Oh cool, thanks for the info. All this while I was like "now I gotto rewire the whole thing for the Rivian".

I have 2 separate 50 amp breakers for each outlet.
