Just wondering where most New Englanders install their chargers. Was plan I’m on putting it in my garage, but my Dad is freaking out about EV car charging tires his electrician friends have warned him about.

I assume you meant fires and not tires.. I have my charger in the garage, no issue. The Rivian battery is sealed and has a decent amount of fire retardant around the cells.

I'm not worried in the slightest.

Mine is in my garage, has been there since November last year, haven't had any weird problems.

You could always install the charger inside using properly sized copper wire and then hardwired to the charger itself like it supposed to be. Then just make a passthrough for the connector plug, so you can charge the vehicle outdoors. Maybe have it go through a side wall into a weather tight box that you can coil up the charge cord into when not in use.

I know plenty of people who park in garages. I haven’t heard of an incident.

I’m in Washington DC. But I’ve been charging indoors for Almost a year. No issues. I do think it’s important to be sure your electrician really knows what they’re doing. There’s a lot of confusion about the correct wiring and the correct outlets if you go plug-in. I am hardwired.

For Best battery practices i usually charge only to about 52%. And on a daily drive I usually come home at around 30 to 40. When I charge I actually charge at a very low rate even though my charger could do 48 A I’m usually at about 25. I don’t need to charge fast. I just needed to charge. I hope these things preserved the battery and also minimize the heat of charging and prevent any future risks.

Just make sure is done by one or more of your Dad's electrician friends to make sure everything is on code.

Does you Dad store cans of gas and gas-powered tools/vehicles inside? THAT'S something he should be freaking out about instead. Not only the fire potential but also the fumes.

His recommendation sounds like it's fear-based and misinformation-based. EVs have FAR FEWER fires than gas vehicles. IIRC gas vehicles are 10 times more likely to have a fire ... there were numbers published recently that have been cited several times in this forum.

That's great, but how many garages have you burned through?

Edit: I charge inside, outside, and anywhere I can
