I must have missed where this has actually been demonstrated by Tesla. They have some short video that shows the app working but that stuff is incredibly easy to fake.
Tesla's powerwall business if huge. They will do V2H well and have likely had the hardware in place and planned since powerwall 2.

I really hope rivian enables this soon given the competition.
Absolutely a missed opportunity upon introduction of Max Pack. Rivian at least could have provided some semblance of a roadmap to future V2H capabilities at introduction of Max. Focused on profitability instead, which I get. But R2 is a ways off… need something even if only information to try to keep the faithful motivated in the meantime.

So why no real demonstration of it at the cybertruck event?

What would they demo? It's software enabled for Powerwall owners.

Tesla is literally the worldwide expert in this area. Their hesitancy is probably in part that NCA/NMC chemistry is not a great match for frequent home use. Also the functionality competes with Powerwall sales. Most people seem to buy multiple powerwalls. That trend will probably change.

It's likely all current Tesla production has V2H functionality already present. They only introduce features when they need a demand bump.

RJ talked about their development of bi-directional chariging in his "Ask Rivian" video earlier this year. It's in the works.

Could this also be a factor in their recent decision to Include a free charger with R1T sales? To clear out the old non bidirectional inventory? Possible.

The charger isn't an actual charger but a fancy extension cord. The hard part isn't the Rivian wall connector. Bi directional requires an inverter and connection similar to what is used for solar plus batteries.

The good news is that the hard part of V2H is well within the mainstream of what is happening with solar.

Nice to see RJ reiterating this. Makes it seem like something they will truly follow through on as opposed to a pie in the sky feature that they mentioned early on but are now not talking about. I would love to be able to reserve one of our electric vehicles for house backup as our all-electric house consumes a lot more than our 2 powerwalls can hold in the VT winter if we have an outage (which we did just earlier this week).

I find this unlikely because they only have one vehicle with a 48V subsystem and the onboard charging hardware is going to be different between vehicles because of this.

After I posted I saw an interview by Tesla's head vehicle engineer that indicated only the CT has the neccessary hardware for bi directional.

We have two EVs and I'm finally pulling the trigger on installing a second charger to make cable management easier. I looked at hardwired options due to California incentives and found that the Tesla wall charger shows VtH capability (they call it Powershare).

https://shop.tesla.com/product/universal-wall-connector

In my use case (to charge my R1S full time), it would be a $120 premium to have an "integrated J1772 adapter," but it looks just as clean as the Rivian wall charger for $200 less so I will probably buy it.

That is interesting, I wonder if it works bidirectional through the J1772 adaptor as well.

Edit: I’m very surprised they were not touting that feature when they announced this.

I need to see someone actually use the CT for VtoH. There is no detail around the mentioned wall connector, I’ve never seen a VtoH setup that does not require a bidirectional charger and I do not know anyone currently making one with a NACS connector.

I think like many other players they are close to getting this functionality but to this point Ford is the only player besides some Chademo vehicles that have actually shown it in action.
The CT does indeed have a bidirectional charger. It's how they can do the Powershare thing. 11.5 kW AC out of the truck's NACS port (same max power it can charge at on AC power) into an appropriate Powershare Mobile Connector (which we haven't see yet, just a mention of it on Tesla's website).

But yes, we are all waiting to see it in action.

But CT also has 9.6 kW power output NOW via the NEMA 14-50 receptacle in the truck bed.

Yeah, I would have bought it for my Rivian had it been available when I got mine. That Powershare capability is a nice addition too but that currently only works with the Tesla Cybertruck.

That is only part of the solution. Rivian has it as well built into the vehicle but do not have the software enabled yet to utilize it. Still requires a wall unit capable of bidirectional flow. Looks like based on the features on the Tesla website the universal Tesla charger is capable of this but not sure all of the software for the CT or charger is completed and released. I will be looking forward to the detailed instructions on how to fully implement it and see it in action.
