Stopped in here to charge before heading back to Denver yesterday. Chargers are easy to access and things connected very quickly. However, I could barely crack 100 kw/h when charging and this quickly dropped to about 80. I had about 50% charge at the start, and did not pre-condition, but still this seemed pretty lame. I’m used to getting much better charging rates from the RAN units.

SOC on start?
battery chemistry and size?
How long had you driven before you arrived at the charger?
gen of your truck (I'll assume gen 1 based on your join date for the forums)

These are all things that impact charge rate.

OP started at 50%, so 100kW not that surprising given no preconditioning. Unless the truck indicated that rate was limited by charger, that’s just the rate the truck was asking for.

yeah - sounds normal - preconditioning would have helped and of course a lower SOC would have allowed a higher charge rate at start. Wish we had a few RAN options in NoCo off of i25 but now that I am out of my free 6 month RAN charging window it matters less. I live in Fort Collins and definitely short on fast charging up here although I rarely need. In fact, I usually hit the unmarked ones that the guys from Out of Spec have at the Powerhouse on college ave.

Just did a long distance trip to west coast and back and never once needed a app to start charging. Of course it's a bit more spendy using Tesla chargers this way but I love the convenience of just pulling up and charging at Electrify America, Tesla and RAN chargers.

Sounds normal. Preconditioning makes a very big difference, especially as the temperature cools heading in winter. It usually takes over 20 minutes of preconditioning to enable faster charging. The battery temp should be over 80 degrees ideally.

If you don’t mind me asking, how do the Powerhouse ones work? Drive by all the time, just never stopped in. Always assumed they were L2 for employees there.

They have an app you have to dl. Note they are battery operated so they slow charge up and use local batteries to charge at DC rates. You can see the current charge state by the position of the light meter thing on the top of the unit. Kyle mentioned in one of the videos that they were available for public but not on Plugshare since they can't host non stop charging.

Always precondition if you want optimal charging rates. Every time I dont precondition I get around 100kW max.

Thanks for the info, I did not know what the charge temp should be. I am in Nor Cal but I am to close to a Tesla SC ( 10 min) So perheat only go up about 10 degrees. No choice on Rivian to turn on Preheat...

Yes there is manual precondition button on the Rivian charging page. Or you can set the charger as your destination and it will automatically precondition.

Sorry I mis typed... I was looking for a perheat button on the Rivian App, I knew where the button was on the R1... (did not know about the "Set the destination" to activate preheat)

Ah right. they don't have it on the app, at least not yet. Hopefully it will be a feature soon.

There is a button in the charging display to manual force the preconditioning to start. “Prepare for fast charging” If the battery is really cold it could take 39 minutes. Monitor the battery temperature in the Rivian drive modes menu

Appreciate all the tips. Yes, I realized too late that I should have pre-conditioned. I'm in a Gen2 TriMax R1T.
