Demo Rivians Now for Sale

I wondered if this was going to be an issue, but got the 12V battery warning on my dash upon leaving work today.

I still have the Model 3, so parking the R1T in the garage with the hood open, hoping for an appointment earlier than the one currently scheduled for mid December.

Hi there! Anyone go through a demo purchase recently? I noticed rivian had emailed about purchasing and to check out their demo site, so I’ve been stalking the site every day. A bunch of R1S showed up on the site, including a 2025. I was able to snag one, but wanted to know what the process look like, and if a different one came up that I liked more how would I go about canceling my first one?

They should contact you within a week or so to verify that you want to go through with the purchase. Generate paperwork for you to approve, etc... Be patient. The first contact takes longer than you think it should take.

If the vehicle is currently at the factory, it can be shipped to your local service center. The will allow for home delivery, but said it would cost $1,000 extra to do that instead of at the service center. If the vehicle is currently at a service center instead of the factory, according to the last reports, they will not ship the vehicle.

If possible in California, I would ask for self-registration and you can deal with the DMV. At least in Kansas, the registration team at Rivian was nuts - see my posts on the previous page. I eventually switched to self-registration with the DMV, after I had already overpaid them for registering the vehicle. I'm still waiting on the ~$5,700 refund from Rivian that they claim is finally arriving this week after 2 months.

Wow thanks for this info! I’ve been going through the forums but really on edge about the whole process. I didn’t know they could ship from factory! I was looking at some good ones that were in Normal and this is great to know in case I find one I like more haha. I appreciate your reply!.

Just learned about these demos and saw a bunch pop up today. Snagged one in VA, I'm in GA. I've got a trade in offer from Rivian to buy out my lease.

1. Has anyone done a trade in on a demo? Wondering if I'll have to drive the trade to VA or they can take it in Atlanta.
2. Any concerns about battery health on a 2022? One I reserved had 100 miles, listed as "new". I don't beleive there's a way to look at battery health in the service menu anymore. Anyone had luck with a service center pulling that info on a demo? My concern is a vehicle that was left at too high or low of a charge for a long time.
3. Can self referral codes be used on demos? There was no place to enter it when I "reserved".

Hopefully the battery hasn't been sitting at a high state of charge for a long time. That is the kiss of death, even worse with high temps.

I looked through the demo Rivians and never once saw a good deal so hope you got one. I found that I could save a lot of money finding one from a private party or dealer than what was offered through Rivian themselves. At the time I bought mine, a demo 2023 R1T was about 13k more than what I paid for mine.

Is it really even possible for a Rivian to sit at a high state of charge for a long time? Vampire drain alone will get it down to levels that most consider safe for long term storage in a matter of a few days. I suppose if it was plugged in and set to 100% charge then it would be possible, but that seems very unlikely.

I'd be more worried about it sitting at very low states of charge instead.

Good points but I have seen EVs at dealers plugged in and at high SOCs. When I talked to my local SC they were clueless about good charging hygiene. These trucks with 100 miles and 2-3 years old I’d be very wary of. Most likely nobody looked after them from a battery perspective.

Vampire drain on mine has been pretty low, not as good as my Teslas’, but about 1/2 to 3/4 percent a day with gear guard off. I would also wonder what climate it has been setting in. Was it indoors which is unlikely or outside all the time.

Wish I could be of more help, but I did not have a trade in for my demo purchase earlier this year. Rivian's trade in offer was much lower than even Carvana, CarMax, etc.

My 2022 was also advertised as "new" with "100 miles", but when I got there it actually only had 27 miles on the odometer.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the battery health as little as it would have been used. I get what you're saying, but I would like to think that they would have topped the battery off here-and-there while it's sitting in the showroom, but I could be wrong. FWIW, mine has (still to this day) 317 miles of range (normal EPA rating for a LE with 21" wheels) at 100%, even 8.5k miles later.

Can't help with the referral codes either. Wasn't a thing when I purchased my demo in May. If it is a thing on demo purchases, I'd love to send you my code to use!

FWIW, mine has been flawless over the last 8,500 miles (knock on wood). Daily driving, road trips, one off road trip, lots of RV towing, etc. No service appointments needed. Hopefully you have the same luck!

I also picked mine up at the Richmond, VA service center. Really helpful/knowledgable people there. I rented a car through Enterprise and made a 1-way trip to the Enterprise a mile from the service center. They insisted they pick me up so I wouldn't have to walk (which I wouldn't have minded after that long drive). I then drove the truck home to TN from VA.

Agree about the battery sitting. I wouldn't think the showroom folks would keep it at 100%, hopefully Rivian tells them better.

I bought a demo with 100 miles on it this past March. Was 2022 QM. I traded it on my Tri Max a month ago. I assumed it had been rejected by original purchaser and I could see why. Fit and finish was fine, but software was not good. Constant phantom braking and every time I passed a semi on the interstate cruise would slow down, sometimes by 10mph; cameras were not good either. VIN was 15,000 or so. SC tried to fix it, but just wasn't worth it to keep trying. I saw on the last update they fixed a "rare issue" when the cruise software would pick up a vehicle to far ahead. That's what mine was doing. A phantom car would show up on the drivers screen whenever I passed a semi. Anyway, point is any 2022/2023 with a 100 miles had issues that may or may not be fixed. Yes it is under warranty, but SC appointments get old. Buy with your eyes open.
