I would say that article is pretty spot on, but the problem is unique to Tesla. Musk is a polarizing guy, his supporters have been enthusiastic adopters of their cars, but he's also putting a lot of people off with his antics, putting a hard ceiling on their addressable market.

Tesla has gone from cutting-edge cool to 'California Camry'. Mostly, I think, because they are a very common sight on the road. Also, because the body style hasn't changed much, most people can't tell an old one from a new one.

In California, not that long ago, someone who bought a Tesla was the envy of their neighborhood. Now they are asked by perfect strangers why they would buy a car from Elon's company. Nobody wants to deal with that. Tesla has dramatically reduced prices and still they are losing market share.

To the topic of this string, most EVs other than Tesla are growing in volume. I think there is space for both button-centric Evs and screen-centric EVs. My Rivian is the best vehicle that I have owned, and the first screen-centric model. I'm not going back.

I love cars but am not an expert. The people at VW are experts. If they see fit to invest $5B; that is enough for me to not worry about Rivian.
