Yes, I agree.

Short of surveying everyone who works at the big three, I have no way of knowing for sure, but I do suspect there are those working there that for whatever reasons aren’t particularly thrilled with BEV‘s, if not outright hostile to the idea of the demise of the internal combustion engine. This was one of the key factors in my selecting Rivian over any of the legacy auto makers. If I had bought a Ford lightning, imagine how I would be feeling right now. The irony is that the Ford F-150 lightning outsells the Rivian R1T.

It's funny how Farley says people won't buy a $75k EV, but he has no problem selling them ICE trucks that cost way more than $75k. You have to actually show people the value in the product instead of expecting the customer to find it on their own... Ford/ GM/ Stellantis have done a terrible job with this.... This is what happens when you just recycle old ideas for decades - you get lazy.
You might recall couple of years ago that Ford was going to make big 3 row SUV based on the Lughtining (Excursion EV, as it were), then they decided against it due to what they would have to sell it for and how heavy it would be.

Unlike the GM Escalade IQ, where they can share the platform with Hummer EVs, Sierra EV and Silverado EV, Ford didn't see the market capture large enough to justify the investment, even if there was a Navigator EV version.

Fast foward to today, Ford is convinced that EV needs to be low cost to be successful; hence, their recent new EV architecture press conference (this past summer). Ford is now focused on the $30K EV pickup, a mid sized truck.

I believe Ford will kill the Lightning but will introduce the $30K truck. In Europe, Ford has been selling Explorer EV for about a year. Perhaps they might introduce that into US at some point to be R2 competitor if R2 is very successful.

I think you have it right. Ford now thinks only cheap EVs will be successful. I am prepared to be underwhelmed by whatever it is they finally release. I say that because they can’t seem to break the cycle of old thinking and shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to EVs and innovation.

With the Lightning, they tried to split the difference between old and new and it didn’t do anything to excite EV lovers or convert ICE owners. I work for an electric cooperative and we have both a Lightning Lariat and a Silverado EV WT in our fleet. I’ve driven, ridden in both and I would choose the Lightning if I had to choose between the 2. But it’s still boring as hell.

Ford also had to fight with their dealers when they tried to push more EVs. Rivian is lucky they don’t have that problem because it really seems to have derailed Ford’s initial efforts.
