Been excited about taking the R1S on a real, proper road trip and finally had the chance to do so this past week by driving from The Bay Area to Bend, Oregon and then Richland, WA for a triathlon. I really like see everyones experience on these thing so figured I'd throw mine in here as well, because what the hell!
From the start I will say my over all impression was this was far easier and less stressful than I could've imagined. Charging was never an issue and something I never really thought about.
Charging Wise:
With the Gen 1 R1S and a large pack, I had enough charge starting out to drive for hours without ever needing to charge. I stopped once after an hour or so to use the bathroom and stretch my legs at a Tesla Supercharger in Williams, CA. I used my A2Z adapter and it worked without issue. I charged for maybe ten minutes while I sued the bathroom and bought a lemonade. Added around 30-40 miles or so. Cool. Wasn't stopping long.
Drove all the way to the RAN site in Mt. Shasta, CA and plugged in to charge while eating lunch. Quick lunch and car now had 300 miles of range after arriving with 60 or so. I then just drove on to Bend without stopping.
My weird observation here was this was a quicker stop than it would've been had I then needed a gas station. It felt like I was multitasking in a way. I then just drove to Bend 4 hours away and charged at the Rental house I had for the night.
Car was fully charged in the morning and got me all the way from Bend to Richland.
Driving back was roughly the same. Charging stops in Richland to get groceries at an EA station added all the range I would need to get back to Bend, where I charged at the rental house again.
Then, Bend to Mt. Shasta and finally Mt. Shasta to Concord, CA. Honestly the range of the car was really, really good. Range anxiety felt odd honestly. I drove for 4 hours without needing to charge. I stopped multiple times to stretch my legs and use the bathroom in this period.
The Car itself:
Driving the R1S on a road trip was fantastic. Audio quality was great on music and audio books. I found the Highway assist was great to have on the interstate and made the long drive much more relaxing over all.
Overall I get why people are worried about range and charging, but after this trip I personally care less about it. I thought the trip was as easy to slightly easier than doing the same trip with a regular gas car in the end. When the infrastructure is there, the experience isn't that different
