Forward extendable R1T bed?

Has anyone made / looked at making a replacement for the front of the bed, back of the gear tunnel, that contains a lockable / removable hatch/door so the bed could be extended into the gear tunnel? Is that even possible? I haven't looked behind there, but the number of times my bed is 4" or so too short is rather large. Yes, it would be a pain to empty the gear tunnel, but worth the 10 minutes or so if it could be used as more bed. Recently had to deliver a weight set that was maybe 2" too long for the bed, snowing and raining. Ended up with 2 of my 4 tonneau panels installed and the long pieces sticking out over the tailgate.

Dangit. That's what pillars and headers are for. Maybe it's a safety precaution in case of rear-end collisions, but with a big back window at head/neck height that seems lame.

It's probably more like a firewall for the passenger compartment and stiffening the bodyshell for side impact.

Isn't there an open space at back of the bed where the tonneau retracts, if you don't have one. I swear I saw a post before of someone that made that extra storage space in their bed.

Somebody made a drawer there. There's pictures somewhere on the forum. Nice idea, it's super-small though. Maybe 6-8" total?
