R1S Tri Max
Hello community, this is my first post. I recently purchased a R1S Tri Max from having a Tesla Model 3.

I was able to open the garage with my Tesla but I cannot program it with my Rivian. My garage door opener is a Genie Model 3120.

What I have tried: I used both of my remote controls with new batteries that came with the unit. I have bought a replacement one on Amazon, programmed that remote without a problem, but could not program the garage opener within the Rivian.

What happens: I go thru the first part with no issues when it asks me to keep the remote 6” from the rear view mirror. It confirms that part. However, the next part asks to send 3 different signals but my garage door does not open. When it asks this, I say no and it prompts me to do it manually from the unity. I attempt that way multiple times but also nothing. I then get the message to call the Rivian help desk. I called once and I was on the line for more than an hour and none of the reboots worked that they asked me to do because it is not that kind of issue.

Please help. I’m hoping someone has a Genie garage door opener and had the same issues but resolved it.

Have you had this Genie for a long time? There is a limit to how many remotes/Homelink devices it can have.

In other words, if you've added/replaced remotes, multiple vehicles over the years, including those you don't have anymore, can quickly add up to the device limit.

I have had this problem with my Genie and had to reset and clear the devices. You can easily find how to do it online by model number and there are videos to show you how.

It will require you to "learn" every device and vehicles again.

Good luck.

I’ve had it since I got my new house in 2021. I’ll try deleting all the codes and re programming them. It’s just that I didn’t have a problem when I bought a universal remote from Amazon after I tried it on the Rivian. Thanks for your suggestion.

OK, this sounds stupid, but does your opener have LED light bulbs? If so, you might try swapping them with garage-door-opener-safe bulbs. Normal LED bulbs have the light modulated by switching on and off rapidly. This generates RF noise which can interfere with the opener signal.
I think I got this one: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Genie-Universal-Garage-Door-Opener-LED-Light-Bulb-GLEDB2-R/310186985
I kept the same light bulbs since I got the new house in 2021 but it’s worth a shot. Thank you.

I tried hooking that feature up when we first bought the R1S over a year ago and gave up and just installed a clicker on the visor. Old school I guess. JB

Don't give up, this should work. I've connected my R1T to a 2020 chamberlain and to a 1998 craftsman. Both work. I had to put the garage door opener into "learn" mode before the Rivian did it's thing. And, I would use the original garage door opener to "train" the Rivian. All else fails, reset the opener to delete all the codes, reboot the infotainment, and start over.

Garage door reset should do the trick. It was the issue for my last car.

I have a 2025 R1S and a Liftmaster garage door opener and I’ve had the same experience. I have repeatedly go through all the steps; I’ve tried changing the position of the car relative to the garage door, held the remote six inches from the mirror different, tried programming while parked in the garage, etc. I’ve done soft and hard reboots, and spent an hour on the phone with a Rivian representative trying to sort things out. Nothing worked.

I don’t know if they are related, but during this process all of my other openers stopped working as well. So, as one respondent mentioned, maybe Rivian’s system was an opener too far. My garage door opener is quite old. I have no idea. What I know is that it is not worth updating my garage door motor, which works fine to accommodate this, so I’ve simply given up. I keep my old remote in the console as I did with my previous vehicle and use it as I always did.

I had to put my door opener into learning mode like the poster above said. Then I was able to get the Rivian to trigger the open/close.
