Gear guard caught someone driving into my car in a car park. Minor damage but still they just drove off. What do you when you have clear video footage and a clear license plate?

maybe an obvious question but curious what the outcomes have been for others.

insurance claim, police?

police 100% with the footage they can potentially charge them with hit and run which will make them think twice in the future.

Police. File a report. Your insurance will need it.
Step 1: make a report, you'll need it if you plan to file a claim with your insurance
Step 2: pay the $5 to run the plate with one of those internet-fangled privacy smasher websites and get their information
Step 3: reach out and say you made a report and want their insurance information
Step 4: ?

No... Let your insurance company handle it. If you haven't already, contact them immediately. They will deal with reaching out to the other driver and/or their insurance. That's their job. A police report should also be filed immediately.

As others have said, file a police report. Usually parking mishaps are on private property and police won't do much besides file a report. Then take the report number and file with your insurance..they will love the video when the other person says "my car was never near there and I don't know what you're talking about."

My thought is I pay my insurance to deal with these issues...and they happily will go after another person to get reimbursed. You get the subtle satisfaction of knowing you helped up their points on their insurance record...

First place to start is your insurance, IF it's worth the deductible and the loss of any no-claim discounts you have. Consider this first.

Police in some places will tell you that they don't give a shit about petty things like this. And in others, they will aggressively pursue the criminal. If the stereotypes are true, your area supposedly has so much crime that they might not care.

I have successfully pursued a damage claim against a driver by sending a request to the AZ motor vehicle office requesting insurance info for a plate. That was a commercial vehicle, not sure if the same applies to personal. They didn't tell me the driver/owner info, only the insurance, and I filed a claim. Then that insurance company forced their insured to answer the claim, and paid it. This was not via my insurance, and there was no police report.

You should file a police report. Leaving the scene of property damage is a crime in most jurisdiction. Your insurance company will pay out the claim and go after the responsible party through subrogation. They might put it under uninsured motorist coverage.
