Didn’t have luck with the search fxn…

I’ve tried using hands sorta free on my Gen 1 R1s for long highway drives, but the thing doesn’t really appreciate that semis don’t always respect the dashed lane lines.

Is there a way to adjust how far from “center” the car will pilot toward? Figure it would be better design to leverage all the cameras and optimally position the vehicle within the lane based on the behavior of drivers in adjacent lanes… but that seems more like natural rather than artificial intelligence.

Nothing feels less good than driving a car full of your kids while the semi-autonomous car pulls you closer to a weaving semi.

For anyone that’s had a toddler, and knows the always-on-edge feel that they’re just about to do something unknowingly harmful… that’s the feeling I have when trying to use autonomous driving in the R1S. A “bonked head” at highway speeds is much worse though..

Gen 1 only uses 1 camera for Highway Assist (HWA). The majority of the 11 cameras serve no function at all, but especially not for ADAS. This will also never change. ADAS development for Gen 1 is over.

With the knowledge they have now, and ai data, I feel an update to gen 1 vehicles would be an easily doable project to continue. Even minor updates to improve the highway driving would be appreciated.

I'm sure they could, but the Gen 1 Driver+ stack is so essentially a MobileEye product from a long time ago that is so different from the Autonomy+ stack that Rivian has developed themselves that diverting any software dev resources to it is probably considered a distraction to them. If an emergency/dangerous bug somehow got introduced in an update to the vehicle they might take a look, but there aren't any new features (like the co-steering feature the OP suggests) coming to Gen 1.

If you require better ADAS in gen1, get the aftermarket Comma 4 and be done.

By the numbers, all gen1 delivered will become the minority of all Rivian cars if it has not already. From business POV there is no reason to expect Rivian to put any serious development dollars behind it. Whatever updates gen1 can expect to receive are most likely restricted to features that are universal with all others. Evident in update release notes... The amount of stuff dedicated for gen1 has already been trending down (lacking updates on autonomy). The most recent one, for example, essentially a moderate sized patch to fix bugs.

Planned obsolescence is always a thing and especially so for tech laden consumer goods. This may be happening sooner than expected for some. But at the same time to be expected. Gen1 production start was delayed, in part due to COVID, and development began with older tech. This is also why gen1 has a seemingly short shelf life (for a car).

In fact, they *tried* to hack the Mobileye system from the start. That was their whole plan - hack the Mobileye EyeQ4 Mid to work with the additional cameras and sensors but they could never get it to work and eventually just gave up to totally change their ADAS stack.

As others have said, if you have a Gen 1 and want to keep it AND have really good ADAS, you just need to install a Comma 4 from Comma.ai.

Thanks all - not looking for an esoteric aftermarket doohickey, just a community-level check to see if I was missing an obvious setting.

Looks like I’m not.

but to some of you - thanks for the snide comments on me buying something that feels obsolete to you. Nothing better to grow a community than to tech-shame new entrants. 🙄

Snide? Laying out facts so the less informed (anyone who comes across the thread later) could catch up on information is snide? Sorry I broke your skin with only words.

Coming from a fellow Gen 1 owner who doesn't think the vehicle is obsolete, I went back and reread the thread, and I don't think anyone here intended anything snide. It read to me like folks were just trying to lay out the current Gen 1 landscape and the options available to you. Sorry it came across that way; that wasn't the vibe I picked up on. Hope you find something that works for your setup.
