I got a 2023 R1T loaner. Compared to 2024 R1S, it definitely has more whining noise when driving. But I’m surprised how smooth it is compared to my R1S. My R1S suspension is stiffer and seems less planted than the truck. Don’t know why Rivian designed the SUV suspension and handling that way.

Part of it is wheelbase and weight distribution. R1S is about 1 foot shorter with a foot shorter wheelbase than R1T or very close to that. An inch or two make a difference in vehicles, a foot a BIG difference. I would expect their suspension to be tuned differently as they really are two different vehicles, but don't actually know.

Tuning circle is something that will be noticed S-43.3' versus T-44.9'. While the T is exceptional for its size, U turns on the road can be hard in one fell swoop.

I wanted a R1S at first but after many test drives of both settled on the R1T for better ride and handling feel. Hoping Gen 2 R1S is better. Haven’t test drove one yet.

The R1T wheelbase is several inches longer, which makes a big difference. That could be what you're experiencing. As far as the whining noise goes, different tires and amount of wear has been identified as a source of lots of noise. There are several threads about it if you're interested.

The solution is Gen 2 R1S and Gen 1 R1T in the same garage.

Ha I got a killer deal on my 2024 R1S quad motor. I can’t even get a gen 2 dual motor at that price. Tri motor would be comparable but it is $30k more than what I paid. Is the better suspension worth $30k more?

Definitely not worth $30k in my book. I’m in the same boat and thankful Rivian refined the gen 1 suspension using an over the air update.

Did the ota really change the suspension? I still think it’s stiff and bumpy. I can’t imagine what suspension was like prior to the update.

At least for me I felt like all purpose was refined enough to make moderate usable for me instead of using Firm all the time to reduce the bumpy ride. I also felt like some of the porpoising behavior was improved after the update.

20” All terrains on all purpose / moderate is a happy medium for me.

I also felt like sport mode was improved to the point where sport lowest firm was not as jarring and sport low soft was something I could use long term.
