At the presser last week Rivian touted improvements to the R1's off road behavior, and allowed us to drive the new machines on a controlled off-road coarse. They had a variety of flavors there, but every one of them was a DM. We will see if any of the many Ub-Tubers that were there caught the reason for this on camera, but it was explained this way by a Rivian representative:
"The differential in the DM improves traction characteristics off-road and helps prevent stall issues in the electric motors."
Now that that argument is over, I cannot help but think that lockers are not far behind. The Trail Boss and the AT4 are slated to have them in next year's models, I doubt that Rivian intends to get left behind.
