That's why we need to put an end to thie fears that tinting films are going to cause glass to shatter. It's not like millions of cars haven't already been treated, and if they were causing such damage, they would be sued out of business. I'm sure there's various qualities of film and one would be smart to do their due diligence to fine high-quality stuff the installer is willing to guarantee it will work as advertised.
Let me first say I have no specific position on this issue, pro or con.

There is at least one mitigating factor that underlies this concern specific to Rivian - the thickness and quality of the glass roof. There have been more than a few reports of people applying minimal hand pressure to the glass while washing or loading the roof rack and the glass cracking. I've never heard of that happening once since sunroofs/moonroofs came out years ago. Yet it has happened numerous times on Rivians as reported here and on reddit. So, comparing it to the other millions of problem free installations isn't a conclusive comparison.

And then there's Kim Java, lol.

It’s interesting that Rivian offers tint and paint protection thru Xpel on their website AND the is an option to choose tint for the sunroof.

I’m not buying the statement that tinting the glass may lead to it cracking. **Just my opinion**

It is interesting though that, despite offering it, there are many reports of customers being told by Xpel installers that they don't recommend it.

Your question on the glass roof sun shade... I bought the OEM for my 2026 R1S last week. I tried for about 30 minutes to get the front edge of the shade inserted between the glass roof and the headliner, and gave up. I shipped it back to Rivian the next day. Maybe, with two people and two plastic pry bars you might get it inserted. I did not want to damage the headliner. I have to keep my R1S outside in my driveway, so even though I've read that car covers can scratch the paint, I ordered a half cover anyway. SoCal and the sun if very intense right now. Maybe the aftermarket glass roof shades are easier to install, but the Rivian OEM is almost impossible.

I have the twraps exterior ppf roof tint. It fits fine and I had it installed by Xpel installers when they were doing other work. I have had it for about 3 months. It's doesn't reduce the transmitted heat enough for Texas so I still have to use a roof shade. It will still protect the roof glass from stone chips or other damage but alone it is not good enough heat protection

I tinted the glass roof on my 2021 Tesla Model S. It significantly reduced the heat intake and I had no issues with it the 3 1/2 years I owned the car.

I recently sold my R1T that still had a camera mount on the center of the inside of the glass roof. It got pulled on, thinking that would be all it took to remove it. The glass deflected at least a half an inch during that and did not shatter. Way more deflection than I'd expect, but again, it didn't seem to care about it.
