Gosh darn it Rivian!!!!

So I’m pissed at Rivian. I received a shipment notification about my NACS adapter arriving next Tuesday. Why am I upset?

• It’s not because the adapter doesn’t come in a robust choice of colors.
• It’s not because the adapter doesn’t double as a hand vac.
• It’s not because the adapter makes my ass look big.
• It’s not even because the adapter effing doesn’t have CarPlay.

I am upset because they are sending this free of charge with free shipping. I am upset at Rivian for sending these to us free of charge when they are at a pivotal point in the evolution of their business for which cash flow is of paramount importance.

Yeah, one can take the short sighted stance that it’s good because it’s free. I personally think that is a 14er-sized pile of bullshit (Google “14er” in relation to mountains in Colorado, and no, no other place has 14ers, right COdogman?).

I am going to call Rivian and ask them to charge me. So now is the time to tag this post with spurious, caustic little laugh emojis, the kind that I use too often!!

I paid, not “like $100K”, but actually $100K FOR THE VEHICLE!!!! Believing that you deserve something for free because you paid x-$$ for something else is the essence of entitlement.

“Hey Rivian, I paid $100K for an R1, so I get other shit for free because I paid $100K for an R1.” That dog don’t hunt. And it makes no sense from a business perspective.

“Hey Home Depot, I paid $1,195.99 for this Makita 15 Amp 16-5/16 in. Corded Circular Saw, so I get that hammer, those wrenches, and 5 pounds of nails free.” How does that thinking make any sense, irrespective of the price of whatever is purchased?

Isn't Rivian getting these from Tesla for free? I also wouldn't be surprised if Rivian is getting a cut of the Supercharger revenue. Supercharger prices are above what Tesla users pay, that money is going somewhere. Rivian bills us directly for the juice and is probably taking some off the top. If we didn't get them for free, we wouldn't use the Superchargers less, and overall charing sales would be lower. I'm sure it makes more money in the long run to give them away. Fear not, though, they're charging for them in the Gear Shop before I've received my first one. And the second one won't be sent until everyone has their first (that's fine, I'm more upset with the lack of availability than anything else). Rivian signed an agreement with Tesla almost 18 months ago and we're still missing the adapters. Things apparently don't move very fast in the car world.

I was pleased to get the NACS adapter from Rivian at no additional cost. You'll notice that I did not use the word "free". I was one of the folks who purchased an A2Z adapter to use while waiting for the one from Rivian. I will keep both as I am a firm believer in backups.

I don’t think this is the place to explain to you how strawmen arguments work and even if it were your apparent zealotry might be somewhat of a barrier to understanding how those two examples are nothing alike. Nuance isn’t something Internet forums are for unless people come to them earnestly.
