Maybe I'm confused, but I thought the Universal just meant it came with a J1772 adapter? I've only been here for a few weeks, but quite a number of people say they have the Tesla Wall Connector.

There's no ambiguity or anything here.

The Tesla Wall Connector is compatible with all NACS vehicles. Throw a J1772 adapter on it and it will work fine with almost all EVs.

The Tesla Universal Wall Connector is basically the regular Wall Connector with a built in J1772 adapter.

For AC, there’s not really “Tesla only”. I charged an R1S for a month on a 2022 era Tesla mobile connector on a 14-30 outlet using a cheap (~$40) Tesla(NACS) to J1772 adapter, and it worked fine. When you’re talking J1772/J3400/NACS/Tesla connector for AC charging, they’re all the same.

Also, FWIW, if you keep your eyes peeled, you can get used EVSEs for cheap. I found a Gen3 Tesla Wall Connector for $75 at a thrift store and it works perfectly, even added it to the Tesla app just fine. All it needed was $4 in hex bolts that were missing. Re-wired my 14-30 outlet to it and during commissioning it prompts you to select the max amperage.

For AC, there’s not really “Tesla only”. I charged an R1S for a month on a 2022 era Tesla mobile connector on a 14-30 outlet using a cheap (~$40) Tesla(NACS) to J1772 adapter, and it worked fine. When you’re talking J1772/J3400/NACS/Tesla connector for AC charging, they’re all the same.

The older Tesla chargers that were made before NACS was the standard are not compatible with Rivians.

What are you considering that? My Tesla mobile connector was included with my March 2022 Model 3, and NACS wasn't a standard until March 2023. Tesla didn't even announce NACS until November 11, 2022, so my mobile connector was clearly from before NACS. And yet, here I am in March 2025 charging a Gen 1 R1S on that mobile connector:

What are you considering that? My Tesla mobile connector was included with my March 2022 Model 3, and NACS wasn't a standard until March 2023. Tesla didn't even announce NACS until November 11, 2022, so my mobile connector was clearly from before NACS. And yet, here I am in March 2025 charging a Gen 1 R1S on that mobile connector:

You’re not using NACS. You’re using a J1772 adapter. Gen 2 mobile and wall connectors don’t work natively on NACS. R2 is NACS.

I still find it weird and confusing that Tesla describes their Wall Connector as
"a convenient and fast way to charge your Tesla vehicle at home."
and their Universal Wall Connector as
"a convenient and fast way to charge your electric vehicle at home, whether a Tesla or non-Tesla"
but both of them can be used to charge non-Teslas.

Why is it weird? They sell an EV and they want you to buy a Tesla vehicle. The Universal Charger is obviously purchased by non-Tesla owners because of the adapter plug (maybe someone that has a PHEV and a Tesla, for example).
