I absolutely love my Gen 1 R1T. We have 68k miles on it. We're also planning on getting an R2 - it is more suited to our use case. Urban driving mostly.

I'd love to keep the truck too, but have concerns mostly around the air suspension.Does anyone share those concerns or any others that would affect longevity?

Have 51000 miles in our lease (which is for 45k miles). Will likely put another 5k miles on it but will return it when lease ends in Jan 2027.

We also have. R2 reservation, but have to see and test drive it to confirm if we still like it. And if we do, we will likely purchase the R2. Else we will get a different EV or hybrid.

Uh.....How did you open only a single door handle?
I have my truck set so when I get out, only the driver door unlocks. I have it set that way for safety reasons. It is a small PIA, because then have to manually unlock everything (if needed), but it is safer to keep all the other doors locked while exiting.

When I approach the truck and it unlocks, all the doors unlock, mainly because the pain of manually opening all of them would be too much. I often approach with my hands full, and need to dump whatever I have in the bed or gear tunnel.

Interesting. Didn't know it did that.

I am a tightwad and don't believe in throwing away money at depreciable assets every few years, so my 2022 Gen1 R1T will be hanging around for a while. I plan on getting at least 8 years, hopefully 10 years or more depending on how well it holds up. Just completed my 45,000 mile checkup last week and all is good. Will likely purchase and extended warranty soon, but I am having a hard time convincing myself to do so. Typically I do not think extended warranties are worth it, but the R1 and the cost of components for out of warranty work is concerning.
I'm keeping mine for as long as I can. Now that I'm out of warranty, here are my suggestions:

1. Get the extended warranty!! Rivians are expensive to fix. I've already had $20,350 in repairs since it went out of warranty last Memorial Day Weekend. EW covered $14,180 but the other $6170 was not covered under the EW plan. Replaced sun visors, tailgate cap, rear center display, front hubs, subframe, 1 damper, door seals, upper control arm, steering knuckles, new v2 PTC, and tailgate assist mechanism. I paid about $8K, with $0 deductible, for the EW which extends my warranty until 3/2031 or 155K miles. It has already covered the cost of repairs in 7 months since it kicked in.
2. Get a comprehensive inspection done before you end your factory warranty. I estimate that my repairs at 57K miles was $21K. This was for 3 dampers and jounce lines, PTC replacement (v1.5), retrofit A/C lines, and replace cabin air temp sensor that was making noise behind the driver display.
3. Gen1 owners - get your subframe replaced and check door gasket adhesive. These are not covered under the extended warranty. Door gaskets are a known issue to be peeling. It cost me $1500 to get all 4 doors replace out of warranty.

To my last breath or until it dies and cannot be revived. Whichever comes first.
You should do an annual report here in the forum for the next 10-20 years or until the truck dies (not you, because we need you around for longer than that). It would be interesting to see how it progresses into old age.

Meanwhile I will be in the Gen6 R1T.

Great Thread.
I really like the way my 1st gen R1T quad drives. This is my 8th truck, I think it is the best one yet. I too worry about repair bills and am considering an extended warranty. I normally traded my previous vehicles at about 140k miles. I'm currently close to 50k. Last year we put almost 30k on the Rivian compared to 2k on the wifes Lexus. Decisions, decisions.

Love my LE R1T but the use-case has changed slightly and so we'll trade it for an R2 (hopefully this Summer) and then trade that for an R3X (202#)

This sounds frightening! Fortunately I’m on a 2 year lease on my 2026 R1S. But you can’t drive much on a lease which makes you feel you don’t own it. My 2023 Ioniq 5 on the other hand has already been paid for with over 70k miles on odometer and zero repair! Only spent $1k for a set of tires at 48k mile. I need to really think about this whole situation of repair cost when comes to my next EV purchase. Legacy car manufacturers like Hyundai and Toyota do have their strengths — they got most mechanical part of car right.

I have kept several vehicles (ones driven by my wife and I) for 10 years or more by maintaining them well, and expect to keep my currently 3-year old R1T for at least 10 years. If anything, I expect it to last longer than most ICE vehicles, there is so little maintenance to do on it.

Who did you go with for the extended warranty?

I'm still on the fence i see some people cruise past 100k no problems, but one big fix could easily cost more than the warranty

As others have said- as long as it’s “nice” to me, I’ll be nice to it and keep it long term. Or at least until something better comes along (if that’s even possible- Scout maybe?).
So far it’s been friggn’ awesome.

Forgive me if you have already stated this elsewhere, but which EW did you use? I'm planning to hold on to my R1S "forever" and a good EW will help in that cause.

Nevermind. I just found your other post: I purchased a 3rd party EW, XCare, last March when I was at 55K miles. I’ve filed 3 claims so far, totaling over $14K in repairs. I’m now at 72K miles.

As I traded in my Gen1 R1S after a little more than 2 years to get a Gen2 but this time a lease, I have 2 more years with it. Would love to get another R1S or maybe an R2 depending on what life has in store for me.
So you'll have paid (approx) the entirety of your original purchase, with no vehicle at the end? BRO! Not trying to make you feel bad, I just...can't imagine doing that.

As I said before, I'm likely driving my R1S to 300k+ before it retires as a home battery backup. I have not purchased an extended warranty. ~75k miles at the moment. Maybe I should make a thread when I hit 155k miles, which seems to be the limit for some of these extended warranties, and review all expenses. None so far...
